Show more

“…Before the introduction of ACT in 2006 [ 107 ], the first-line regimens for uncomplicated falciparum malaria recommended by the Ministry of Health of Brazil were quinine plus doxycycline (formerly tetracycline) for 7 days or a single dose of mefloquine. Case reports of mefloquine (e.g., [ 108 ]) and quinine–tetracycline [e.g., 109 ] failure in falciparum malaria have been published since then. The few clinical trials that evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of these regimens reported cure rates ranging between 98.9 [ 110 ] and 100 % [ 111 ] for mefloquine, and between 77.3 [ 98 ] and 100 % [ 97 ] for quinine plus tetracycline.…”

“…However, resistance to SP was reported in northern Tocantins State soon after its use was implemented [7]. In 1982, resistance to SP was also described in other Brazilian states, such as Rondônia, Pará, Amazonas and Mato Grosso [8, 9]. Subsequently, Boulos et al [10] reported 100% of therapeutic failure to SP in 54 patients, and in the 1980s quinine in combination with tetracycline was introduced as first-line treatment.…”

“…In the 1960s and 1970s, the highlight was the discussion of the performance of strategies to control this endemic disease in several Country regions 12 , 47 . In the 1980s, with favorable results in the control of malaria, which practically restricted its endemic transmission to the Legal Amazon region, new challenges were highlighted, such as resistance to drugs 3 , 60 and the impact of development projects on the Amazon, due to the risk of reintroducing the disease in regions where it was already controlled 174 . More recently, following the discussion of new challenges for controlling diseases transmitted by vectors, interesting studies have been published on climate change and malaria transmission 184 , 185 .…”
