Resistance of Salmonellae Isolated in 1959 and 1960 to Tetracyclines and Chloramphenicol

Abstract: The resistance of cultures of Salmonella typhimurium to tetracyclines and chloramphenicol has been examined periodically. Although none of 200 cultures isolated prior to 1948 was resistant to the antibiotics, 5 % of 100 cultures from man and 9 % of 100 cultures from fowls which were isolated in 1956 and 1957 were resistant to tetracyclines. Among 158 cultures isolated from man and 100 cultures isolated from fowls in 1959 and 1960, 13.9 and 29 %, respectively, were resistant to tetracyclines. In the last series… Show more

“…The clinical problem posed by bacterial resistance to penicillin and streptomycin has led to intensive research into the mechanism of resistance to these drugs. Bacterial resistance to the tetracycline antibiotics has not generally been common, but recent evidence (Ramsey & Edwards, 1961) suggests that it may now be an increasing problem with a need for closer investigation of the mechanism of resistance to these drugs. Studies on resistance to the tetracyclines have been hindered by inadequate knowledge of the mode of their antibiotic action.…”

“…The investigations of Ramsey & Edwards (1961) show that over the years from 1948 to 1960 there was a gradual increase from 0 to 29-0 % in the resistance of S. typhimurium to tetracycline. Manten, Kampelmacher & Guinee (1964) found a similar increase of from 2-1 % in 1959 to 24-4 % in 1962.…”
