Resilience to the Global Economic and Turkish (GEO)Political Crisis Compared

Abstract: Over the last ten years Turkey has gone through two different types of crises, namely the global economic crisis of 2008-2009 and the (geo)political crisis after 2015. This paper analyses the resilience of the economy of the tourism city of Antalya to both crises by focusing on the development of GDP of its inbound tourism countries and the births and deaths of both tourism and non-tourism firms. The impact of the global economic crisis was moderate. The (geo)political crisis of 2016, by contrast, had a strong… Show more

“…There are various indications that over the last twenty years the development path of Antalya's tourism economy has been very dynamic with a lot of adaptability and innovativeness. Antalya's tourism economy has been fairly resilient to crises like the bird flu in 2003, the global financial crisis of 2008, and the Turkish (geo)political crisis in the period 2014-2018 (Terhorst & Erkuş-Öztürk, 2019). This is in line with the region's adaptability and innovativeness.…”

“…Over the last decades, the global tourism industry quickly bounced back without any significant structural change after shocks such as the 9/11 terrorist attack, the outbreak of SARS (2002), the global economic crisis (2008), the bird flu (2009), and MERS (2012) (see World Tourism Organization and International Labour Organization, 2013; Gössling et al, 2021). The same applies to the tourism industry in many tourism places such as, for instance, Sri Lanka after the Tsunami in 2004 (Buultjens et al, 2015), Antalya after the Turkish geopolitical crisis in 2015 (Terhorst & Erkuş-Öztürk, 2019), and Bali after the terrorist bomb attack in 2002 (Gurtner, 2007). Thus, in the past, the industry has shown strong resilience to shocks that do not seem to have triggered any significant structural change.…”

“…The crises that attracted the most attention were those in major global cities such as Hong Kong (Chien & Law, 2003;Luo & Zhai, 2017;Qiu et al, 2020;Siu & Wong, 2004;Tse et al, 2006;U & So, 2020), Antalya (Çakar, 2018;Terhorst & Erkuş-Öztürk, 2019;Türkcan & Öztürk, 2019), Singapore (Henderson, 1999;Henderson & Ng, 2004), and New York (Bian & Wilmot, 2019;Green et al, 2004). This may be explained by the important role played by these cities in the global economy and their complex nature (Maxim, 2016), which contribute to their vulnerability in the face of crisis events.…”

“…Studies have verified the effect of the economic and geopolitical crisis on Turkey's tourism businesses (Terhorst, P., Erkus-Ozturk, H., 2019), on co-movements between oil prices and sector stock markets (Mensi, W. , 2019), the impacts of hotel rooms' demand in developing economies (Kubickova, M., Kirimhan, D., Li, HY, 2019), the effects of unexpected nonmacroeconomic factors (Zopiatis, A., Savva, CS, Lambertides, N., McAleer, M., 2019).…”
