Abstract:Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) has a history of use in China. This paper presents the results of an investigation of HCH residue isomers and their distribution characteristics in soils near Tianjin, China. One hundred eighty-eight soil samples were collected from the Tianjin area. Four HCH isomers-alpha-HCH, beta-HCH, gamma-HCH, and delta-HCH-were detected using gas chromatography for all samples. Concentrations of the sum HCH ranged from 1.3 to 1095 ng g(-1), among which beta-HCH accounted for 52.5%. In addition… Show more
“…The mean concentrations of ΣDDT, ΣHCH and HCB were higher than those reported earlier in China (Table 5). Especially, ΣHCH concentrations were 14.5 times as much as that in Tianjin (Gong et al 2004b). The extremely high ΣDDT and ΣHCH concentrations in several samples close to the chemical industrial parks indicate that these sites are heavily polluted.…”

Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs; dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB)) were investigated in 105 soil samples collected in vicinity of the chemical industrial parks in Tianjin, China. OCP concentrations significantly varied in the study area, high HCH and DDT levels were found close to the chemical industrial parks. The intensity of agricultural activity and distance from the potential OCP emitters have important influences on the OCP residue distributions. Principal component analysis indicates that HCH pollution is a mix of historical technical HCH and current lindane pollution and DDT pollution input is only due to technical DDT sources. The significant correlations of OCP compounds reveal that HCHs, DDTs and HCB could have some similar sources of origin.

“…It was one of the most common OCP pollutants in the studied environmental media. The ratio of a-HCH/ c-HCH is relatively stable, with a value of 4.64-5.83 for technical HCHs, and almost zero for lindane Gong et al, 2004), and it can thus be used to monitor the HCH source (Kim et al, 2002). In the present study, the ratio of a-HCH/c-HCH varied from 0-3.6, a-HCH can be transported through the atmosphere for considerable distances, indicating the presence of a potential emission source of lindane (Brubaker and Hites, 1998).…”
a b s t r a c tAs one of China's great metropolises, Taiyuan is generally recognized to be one of the most polluted cities in the world. It is affected by pollution from heavy industries, and from organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). In this study, we measured the concentrations of OCPs in various environmental media in Taiyuan. We measured the levels of OCPs in 15 soil samples and 34 samples of respirable particulate matter (PM) (17 of PM 2.5 and 17 of PM 10 ) from urban areas of Taiyuan. Analysis of the composition ratios of OCP residues revealed that dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) were the predominant compounds in soil, PM 2.5 and PM 10 . The total DDT concentrations were 1.8-1.0 Â 10 2 ng g À1 in soil, 6.5-1.0 Â 10 3 pg m À3 in PM 2.5 , and 8.5-1.5 Â 10 3 pg m À3 in PM 10 . The total HCH concentrations were 1.4-45 ng g À1 in soil, 5.2-8.0 Â 10 2 pg m À3 in PM 2.5 , and 9.6-8.7 Â 10 2 pg m À3 in PM 10 . Furthermore, source analysis indicated that there was new input of OCPs at some sites. Finally, analysis of the individual OCPs revealed that new OCP contamination was the major problem in Taiyuan. This study suggests that measures should be taken to reduce the levels of OCP residues in order to improve the environmental quality in Taiyuan.
“…As a traditional base of chemical industry in China, Tianjin has produced chloralkli, technical HCH, lindane, chlorobenzene, and pentachlorophenol (PCP) for nearly 30-50 years (Gong et al, 2004;Hu et al, 2005). Although the production of PCP (Na) has been generally forbidden, it is still manufactured by one of plants in this area for controlling the spreading of snailborne schistosomiasis in the south of China.…”
The pollution status of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the sediments of Haihe River, which is the most polluted among the seven largest basins in China, Dagu Drainage River flowing through a chemical industry zone, and two other rivers flowing into Bohai Sea in Tianjin City, China were investigated. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in the sediments from the mainstream of Haihe River were 1.3-26 pg I-TEQ g À1 dry weight (dw) and 0.07-0.54 pg TEQ g À1 dw, respectively. Heavy PCDD/Fs and PCBs pollution, with 1264 pg I-TEQ g À1 dw and 21 pg TEQ g À1 dw, was found in sediment from Dagu Drainage River. The congener profiles of PCDD/Fs indicated that the principal contamination source was the production of pentachlorophenol (PCP) or PCP-Na in this area. The correlation between PCDD/Fs or PCBs and total organic matter (TOM) showed that PCDD/Fs or PCBs were independent on TOM.
