The purpose of this study is to determine the level of satisfaction among residents in public rental housing to solve the housing problems of low-income households. From among the various types of public rental housing, those with large differences in the physical housing environment were selected for an analysis of the environmental factors impacting tenants' residential satisfaction. To achieve the study's objective, the residential satisfaction of tenants in public residential housing in Seoul was researched and analyzed; results are as follows. First, the environmental factors impacting individuals living in public rental housing were described as the "Safety and Incivility Factor" (SIF), "Physical Factor" (PF), "Facilities Accessibility Factor" (FAF), and "Equipment Factor" (EF). Second, these factors were found to impact residential satisfaction of tenants in public rental apartments in the order of EF, SIF, PF, and FAF; they were found to impact the tenants of public rental general houses in the order of SIF, EF, PF, and FAF. These differences are based on the public rental housing type, which necessitates plans that consider priority improvement of residential environment factors according to housing types, to improve the residential satisfaction of tenants in both currently operating and future public rental housing.

Purpose The purpose of the current research is to examine the student’s residential satisfaction (SRS) of dormitories in Tehran and Shiraz. Providing homes for non-native students is considered as one of the key issues in university development. Design/methodology/approach A combination of qualitative and quantitative measurements (mixed methods) was used to compare some of the design features between middle-rise and high-rise student housing. Questionnaire forms were distributed between male students of “Shahid Beheshti University” and “Shiraz University” dormitories. Cluster sampling is done among residential blocks in each university. Students assessed perceived attributes of dormitories by indicating their satisfaction from different categories. The obtained data were analysed by SPSS software and the Mann-Whitney test. Findings Findings show that although in comparing two samples with only some of the criteria, Shahid Beheshti University dormitory was ranked higher, generally Shiraz University dormitory was more successful in meeting resident’s satisfaction. Among the physical features, the pleasant views and landscape are important components which are related to aesthetic preferences. Research limitations/implications More research examining student/environment interactions is needed to pay close attention to cultural aspects. The consideration of culturally diverse individuals in the assessment may also provide valuable insight into the students’ residential satisfaction. Practical implications In sum, the design implications resulting from the data analysis act as a step toward an evidence-based design approach. Housing designers can integrate the research findings with design solutions. They take active part in the design process by developing new methodologies to highlight their role in creating high-quality student housing. Originality/value The relationship between students and their residential environment has been a mainstream topic in environmental psychology. Some previous studies have focused on socio-demographic characteristics, whereas others have dealt with the physical characteristics of the student housing that affect SRS.

Multi-Scale Evaluation of Suzhou City’s Sustainable Development Level Based on the Sustainable Development Goals Framework

A sustainable development system involves resource limitation, environmental stress and policy regulation, and the flow and integration of resources and factors on a multi-level spatial scale. However, it is difficult to meet the actual needs of local development through traditional single-scale and macro-scale evaluation of the comprehensive level. Taking Suzhou City as an example, based on the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals (SDGs) framework, the entropy method and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) were used to construct an evaluation index system of the municipal sustainable development level. Growth and obstacles of the sustainable development system and its subsystems were systematically analyzed on a multi-level spatial scale. Results show that during the study period (2000-2016), the sustainable development system in Suzhou was relatively low at the beginning of the study. With the passage of time, it generally developed in a stable, continuous, and balanced direction. The levels of development, deficiencies, and obstacle factors of sustainable development systems and their subsystems are significantly different between levels; especially during the study period, the order change between towns is significantly higher than the order change between districts. Within an evaluation unit, there is a process of rising and continuing growth among certain subsystems, but some subsystems have been developing slowly due to resource constraints, environmental load, etc., or their contribution to the level of sustainable development has remained low. The city sustainable development evaluation index system based on the SDGs framework can meet the requirements of regional assessment and has the potential for further promotion and use. The evaluation results can provide a necessary reference for the subsystem coordination, scale linkage, and resource space allocation of the sustainable development system in Suzhou.
