Research Progress on Oxidative Stress and Its Nutritional Regulation Strategies in Pigs

Abstract: Oxidative stress refers to the dramatic increase in the production of free radicals in human and animal bodies or the decrease in the ability to scavenging free radicals, thus breaking the antioxidation–oxidation balance. Various factors can induce oxidative stress in pig production. Oxidative stress has an important effect on pig performance and healthy growth, and has become one of the important factors restricting pig production. Based on the overview of the generation of oxidative stress, its effects on pi… Show more

“…The antioxidant mechanisms of EOs are associated with their capability to donate hydrogen or an electron to free radicals (ROS) as well as with their ability to detach unpaired electrons inside the aromatic structure to counter free radicals and protect biological molecules from oxidation [ 69 , 70 ]. The supplementation of pig diets with EOs contributed significantly to controlling body damages produced by the disruption in redox balance due to excess ROS species in the organism of pigs [ 69 , 71 ]. Thus, EOs such as propolis EOs, could be used to modulate the oxidative stress in pigs, and prevent DNA, membrane, protein, and lipid damage in their organism [ 71 ].…”

“…Chronic inflammation in adipose tissue due to excessive fat accumulation would promote proinflammatory status and oxidative stress [ 4 ]. The substantial rise in the generation of free radicals in humans and animals that disrupts the antioxidation-oxidation equilibrium is referred to as oxidative stress [ 5 ]. A variety of illnesses have been reported to be pathologically caused by oxidative stress, which has been shown to be correlated with fat accumulation [ 4 ].…”

“…In pigs, a significant number of free radicals are produced because of oxidative damage, which leads to several diseases [ 6 ]. More importantly, the development of the pig industry would be hampered by oxidative stress due to oxidative stress directly limiting the growth performance and health of pigs [ 5 ]. Therefore, studying the oxidative stress in pigs is of great significance to pig production, as well as other animals and human health.…”

“…Oxidative stress also communicates with signaling molecules to exert a physiopathogenic response. Overall, it has a pronounced effect on gut health in pigs and beef calves which ultimately minimizes its production [ 12 , 13 ]. Research on gut microbiota in pigs would not only help construct a healthy gut of the animal but also benefit human studies due to the similarity of anatomic and physiologic attributes.…”
