The working pairs composed of hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and ionic liquids (ILs) have exhibited promising potential in the absorption refrigeration systems (ARS). In order to exploit the possibility of 3, 3, 3-trifluoropropene/ILs as the pairs used in the ARS, the experimental determination on the solubility of 3,3,3-trifluoropropene in 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([hmim][TfO]) and 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([omim][TfO]) ILs was conducted. The present measurements were carried out based on the isochoric saturation method at the temperature range from 303.15 K to 343.15 K. The experimental solubility data were correlated through the non-random two liquid (NRTL) model and Krichevsky-Kasarnovsky (K-K) model, respectively. In addition, the influence of the alkyl chain length for different ILs on the solubility of R1243zf and the dissolving capacities of different HFOs in [hmim][TfO] were compared. Furthermore, the Henry’s constants and mixing thermodynamic properties (enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs Energy) of R1243zf in [hmim][TfO] and [omim][TfO] were calculated and discussed.

The (p, ρ, T) behavior of a refrigerant mixture of 50.00 mass% R1234yf and 50.00 mass% R290 was measured with the isochoric method. Along the six isochores (60, 121, 305, 500, 550, and 600 kg·m–3), a total of 40 single-phase (p, ρ, T) data points were obtained at temperatures from 330 to 400 K and pressures up to 6.6 MPa. In addition, the phase boundary of this mixture was experimentally investigated by visual observation of the vapor–liquid meniscus, and a total of 17 saturated densities and the critical parameters were obtained. Additionally, five saturated densities were also determined from the inflection points of the isochores. According to the multifluid approximation approach, a thermodynamic mixture model was formulated for R1234yf/290 mixtures. The parameters of the mixture model were determined by fitting the experimental data obtained in this work and those available in the literature. Expected uncertainties (k = 2) in calculated values with the mixture model are 0.2% for bubble and dew point pressures, 0.2% for liquid densities, 0.4% for vapor densities, 1% for saturated liquid and vapor densities, and 1.5% for isochoric heat capacities in the liquid phase. The mixture model can also be applied to regions away from the fitted experimental data with reasonable accuracy because it extrapolates well to higher temperatures and pressures, and to lower temperatures.

The popularity of vehicles and the increased time spent in cars with air conditioning systems has led to regulations in many countries that require the use of environmentally friendly refrigerants with minimal global warming and zero ozone depletion potential (GWP and ODP). Cars need high-performance, eco-friendly air conditioning systems to reduce their impact on the environment, lower fuel consumption, and decrease carbon emissions. The aim of the current work was to propose CO2-based blend zeotropic refrigerants, R-455A (R-744/32/1234yf) and R-463A (R-744/32/125/1234yf/134a), to improve the thermodynamic performance of pure CO2 refrigerants. The thermodynamic energy and exergy analysis and system optimization of an AAC system for the new zeotropic refrigerant blends compared to carbon dioxide (R-744), using Aspen HYSYS software, were investigated. The influence of cooler/condenser pressure, average evaporator temperature, cooler/condenser outlet temperature, and refrigerant flow rate on the cycles’ COP and exergy efficiency were conducted and are presented. The results showed that, at the same operating condition parameters, the cycle COP improved by 57.6 and 76.5% when using R455A and R463A instated of R744, respectively, with the advantage of reducing leakage problems due to the higher operating pressure of R744 (5–7 times higher than those of R455A and R463A), as well as requiring heavy equipment, but at optimal operating condition parameters, R744 and R-463A had a maximum COP of 14.58 and 14.19, respectively. The maximum COPs of R744, R455A, and R463A based on the optimal pressure of the cooler/condenser were 3.1, 4.25, and 5.4, respectively. Additionally, regarding the need for environmentally friendly air conditioning systems with acceptable performance in cars due to their impact on the environment and their contribution to global warming, the blend R455A is recommended for use as a refrigerant in AAC systems.
