As bicycling becomes an integral part of sustainable mobility, it becomes essential to enhance planning strategies that ensure bicycling as an efficient mode of transport. While traffic simulation has been extensively utilized for traffic planning of various modes of transport, this type of modeling support is largely lacking in the planning of bicycle traffic.Given the high heterogeneity in the characteristics of bicyclists, the use of microscopic traffic simulation, which incorporates the explicit inclusion of individual properties and preferences, becomes particularly useful for evaluating bicycle traffic performance.By examining real-world traffic, the objective of this thesis is to investigate essential requirements for microscopic modeling and simulation of bicycle traffic on off-street bicycle path segments, and to further develop and evaluate modeling approaches suitable for bicycle traffic. Understanding the fundamentals of how bicyclists interact with the infrastructure and other bicyclists is a necessary step towards accurate simulation of bicycle traffic.In this thesis, research gaps related to the evaluation of bicycle traffic performance and simulation are identified, and methods to validate bicycling data are proposed to determine its quality and suitability for traffic analysis. Furthermore, two distinct modeling approaches are investigated to simulate the impact of gradients in bicycle traffic. The first involves calibrating a car-based model using a widely-used microscopic traffic simulation software, and the second implements a power-based model rooted in the physical forces acting on a bicycle. Lastly, characteristics of bicycle traffic that are relevant for simulating bidirectional traffic are identified and described.The work in this thesis offers a starting point towards enhanced microscopic bicycle traffic simulation that effectively assist the planning of efficient bicycle traffic.

With the increasing popularity of electric-assist bikes (E-bikes) in China, U.S. and Europe, the corresponding safety issues at intersections have attracted the attention of researchers. Understanding the microscopic behavior of E-bike riders during conflicts with other road users is fundamental for safety improvement and simulation modeling of E-bikes at intersections. This study compared the conflict avoidance behaviors of E-bike and conventional bicycle riders using field data extracted from video recordings of different intersections. The impact of conflicting road user type and gender on E-bikes and bicycles were analyzed. Compared with bicycles, E-bikes appeared to enable more flexibility in conflict avoidance behavior. For example, E-bikes would behave like bicycles when conflicting with motor vehicles/E-bikes, and behave more like motor vehicles when conflicting with bicycles/pedestrians. Based on this, we built an Extended Cyclist Conflict Avoidance Movement (ECCAM) model. (What is the advantage of this model?) Field data were applied to validate the proposed model, and the results are promising.

To effectively regulate traffic on highways and networks of modern megacities, it is necessary to introduce Intelligent Transport Systems, which include many innovative solutions, in particular, mathematical models for describing the dynamics of traffic flows.The article is devoted to a brief description of the current state in this area in its development — from the simplest macroscopic and microscopic models that have become classic to modern developments.Special attention is paid to the original multilane models developed by the authors of the article within both approaches.The macroscopic model is based on the quasigasdynamic approach, while the microscopic one uses the ideology of cellular automata and constitutes a generalization of the Nagel-Schreckenberg model for the multilane case.The difference in the representation method and the mathematical apparatus for the mac-roscopic and microscopic description of traffic flows is briefly described, followed by the review of the main models at different stages of their development, presented by foreign and Russian authors.Special attention is paid to the three-phase theory of Boris Kerner and models built in the framework of this theory.Examples of modern software for traffic modeling are given.The original quasigasdynamic model of traffic flows, which uses the continuum approximation and is constructed by analogy with the well-known model of gas dynamics, is briefly described. Due to the introduction of the lateral speed, the model is generalized to the multilane case.An original microscopic model based on the cellular automata theory and representing a generalization of Nagel- Schreckenberg model for the multilane case is described. The model has been further developed by taking into account various driving strategies and behavioral aspects.The article presents a brief overview of the state of the art in the field of mathematical modeling of traffic flows, as well as original macroscopic and microscopic models developed by the authors for the case of multilane traffic.
