Research on Knee Joint Load and Influencing Factors of Typical Tai Chi Movements

Abstract: Background. Tai chi is recognized worldwide for its rehabilitation abilities and healthcare benefits. However, in recent years, some movements associated with tai chi have been shown to damage the lower limb joints. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the effects of different movements, postures, center of mass (COM) movements, and range of knee movement of tai chi exercises on knee joint load. Methods. Fourteen professional tai chi practitioners in two postures (high and low) were enrolle… Show more

“…Thus, practitioners with weak muscle strength in the lower limb who cannot load excessive torque could be prone to injury and pain during Tai Chi exercise. 21 Although Tai Chi is popular as an exercise for improving knee function, knee joint pain may also be closely related to a lack of warm-up, wrong movements and knee joint twisting during Tai Chi practice. There is little research on which factors of Tai Chi practice are related to knee pain.…”

“…It is considered that several Tai Chi movements are consisted with lunges and pushdowns in which significant peak knee flexion and extension torque can be observed. Thus, practitioners with weak muscle strength in the lower limb who cannot load excessive torque could be prone to injury and pain during Tai Chi exercise 21…”

“…The basic form is "Yunshou" and the movements are simple (both upper limbs draw circles from inside to outside in reverse order), which is the essence of Tai Chi (12). During Tai Chi Yunshou training, the movements follow each other up and down and interact left and right to form a coordinated and unified whole body, and the joints and muscles are coordinated and orderly (13). Bilateral active movement is conducive to the functional reorganization and compensation of nerve cells and ultimately the formation of new neural pathways (14).…”
