Research Methods Used in Evidence-Based Design: An Analysis of Five Years of Research Articles From the HERD Journal

Abstract: Objective: This study aims to analyze research methodologies from 157 research articles published in this journal in the last five years (2016–2020). Background: Health environments research is comprised of research covering many topics and from various disciplines worldwide. No systematic study exists to uncover themes in evidence-based design (EBD) research concerning the types of research published, people engaged in research, and the research methods employed. Understanding the nature of health environment… Show more

“…This number of occurrences is greater than the second and third most common exclusion criteria sum (83 cases). This high number of inconsistencies in identifying records through misused key words is consistent with the problem presented by Battisto et al (2023) of not having a comprehensive taxonomy with a set of terms suitable for indexing. Among the occurrences that met the inclusion criteria, reports related to POE and EBD predominated.…”

“…Additionally, the Center for Health Design’s Research Coalition initiated a project to create a standardized glossary of environmental terms and healthcare outcome measures. Phase I of this glossary development identified priority areas and common variables linking design elements to healthcare outcomes ( Battisto et al, 2023 ; Quan et al, 2011 ). Another study aimed to increase awareness of the concept of “design quality” in healthcare architecture and resulted in a taxonomy of themes and terms used in the literature.…”

“…However, researchers in EBD, especially in dementia-friendly design, have utilized diverse terms to describe the architectural variables (AVs) and health and care outcomes (HCOs) when investigating the relationship between the built environment and health outcomes. Furthermore, the use of a wide range of terminology in health environments research has resulted in some ambiguity in the interpretation of terms ( Battisto et al, 2023 ). This poses a significant challenge, as consistent and standardized terminology is crucial for effective communication and understanding among the various specialists involved in EBD ( Anåker et al, 2017 ; Peavey & Vander Wyst, 2017 ).…”
