Research challenges for digital archives of 3D cultural heritage models

Abstract: The increasing creation of 3D cultural heritage models has resulted in a need for the establishment of centralized digital archives. We advocate open repositories of scientifically authenticated 3D models based on the example of traditional scholarly journals, with standard mechanisms for preservation, peer review, publication, updating, and dissemination of the 3D models. However, fully realizing this vision will require addressing a number of related research challenges. In this article, we first give a brief… Show more

“…Technological advances, especially regarding the ability to extend (represent) the physical world and computer modelling capabilities, have led to the creation of an increasing number of models of objects and environments (Koller et al, 2009). The use of Digital Representations (DR) in research offers a number of advantages, especially the ability to create detailed models of possible pasts and futures.…”

“…The downside of TLS data processing in the cloud is related to expensive subscription plans that could make commercial cloud solutions not feasible for heritage projects with limited budget. Whilst open access 3D repositories have been available for 13 several years (Koller et al 2009;Guidazzoli et al 2012), open-source cloud solutions, such as HP Helion Eucaliptus (Helion Eucaliptus, 2015), are still a rare exception (Nurmi et al 2009). …”

“…Generally, the use of 3D in the field of cultural heritage is limited to the often spectacular view of sites and monuments, with less concern for the scientific coherence. Since recent years, however, we observe the emergence of a trend to streamline the production of these 3D models, use, storage and distribution such as in Koller et al [4] and London Charter (www.londoncharter.org).…”
