Reptile anaesthesia and analgesia

Abstract: Anaesthesia and analgesia in reptiles is not more difficult than in any other veterinary species. However, general practitioners often lose the opportunity to perform different procedures in snakes, lizards, chelonians and crocodilians because they may feel uncomfortable with anaesthesia and analgesia of these patients. It is unfortunately common for veterinary surgeons, even those seeing reptiles on a regular basis, to under-use analgesics in reptile patients ( Read, 2004 ). This article will guide practition… Show more

“…Concerning the effects of IV propofol on the cardiovascular system, previously, a stable level and even a decrease in HR have been reported in most reptiles [8,11,12,[39][40][41] except in the case of Bertelsen et al [39], which is consistent with our study and those on dogs and cats [42][43][44]. In most individuals, we observed an increase in heart rate, independent of the propofol dose that was used, after administration, even though our T0 was considered to be the moment of propofol administration.…”

“…Assim, como em mamíferos, a analgesia preemptiva é recomendada previamente a quaisquer procedimentos dolorosos, incluindo administração sistêmica de opioides ou emprego de anestésicos locais. Um estudo de Perpiñán (2018) demonstrou resultados positivos com o uso de metadona (3-5 mg/kg SC/IM a cada 24 horas) em quelônios. Neste caso, foi adicionada metadona na dose de 1 mg/kg ao protocolo, a fim de promover analgesia preemptiva.…”

“…The entire procedure took about five minutes for each specimen and throughout the procedure the animals showed no signs of stress. Following the example for cloacoscopy in other reptiles (Perpiñán, 2018;Morici et al, 2017;Divers, 2014), we did not sedate the lizards as cloacoscopy is considered a 'non-risky' procedure for reptiles and anaesthesia poses greater risks for reptiles compared to mammals. After the procedure, all the animals were hospitalised and monitored for 24 h. These ethically approved procedures were undertaken as routine clinical practice with the owner's permission.…”
