Reproductive outcome of women with unicornuate uterus

Abstract: This study was undertaken to examine the reproductive impact of unicornuate uterine abnormalities cases in a group of 571 women with a uterine anomaly. Hospital records of 1784 patients who presented to the infertility outpatient clinic with infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, pain or acute abdomen during the study period between January 1991 and January 2001, were reviewed retrospectively. “…In the largest series of women with a unicornuate uterus who were infertile or had recurrent pregnancy loss, the live birth rate in those with a communicating rudimentary horn was 15%, with a noncommunicating rudimentary horn was 28%, and with a rudimentary horn without a cavity 35%. Only one woman had a unicornuate uterus without a rudimentary horn and did not have a live birth (48). The highest live birth rates are observed in women with a rudimentary horn, with or without a cavity (49).…”

“…The pregnancy-related consequences of each type of anomaly may be different (6,87,(89)(90)(91)(92) or not between different groups (e.g., arcuate and septate uterus) or subgroups of the same group (e.g., partial, complete, and bicervical septate uterus) (36,93,94). Some of the consequences are related to obstetrical complications that are dangerous to a woman's life, such as pregnancy in a noncommunicating uterine horn of a unicornuate uterus (91,(95)(96)(97)(98)(99).…”

“…Conservative surgical options should be offered especially in nulliparous women. Case reports referred further pregnancies after myotomy and exceresis of the rudimentary horn although prematurity is a significant complication in these pregnancies [14,15]. The kidneys should be evaluated by ultrasound or intravenous pyelograpfhy because of the high incidence of associated renal abnormalities of about 40% [16].…”
