“…Because water is limiting the system, crayfish can only reproduce and grow during a certain period and therefore the population adapts to these conditions. At PCD, recruitment occurred mainly after flooding, in November, which is similar to Central and Northern Portugal, Northern Italy and the United States (Huner and Barr, 1991;Anasta´cio and Marques, 1998;Gherardi et al, 2000;Fidalgo et al, 2001;Mueller, 2007). At PMG, recruitment occurred throughout most of the year but with two main seasons: The first was from spring to early summer and the second during November-December.…”

“…But red swamp crayfish is able to thrive also at cooler climates at higher latitudes and altitudes (Frutiger et al, 1999;Mueller, 2007b;Ellis and England, 2008). P. clarkii can survive, breed and grow in the climatic conditions of UK (Richter and Wiles, 2000), Germany (Dehus et al, 1999), Netherlands (Henttonen and Huner, 1999) or Switzerland (Stucki, 1997).…”

“…Procambarus clarkii typically reaches sexual maturity at -40 mm CL and mates during summer, a period when reproductive adults, especially females, often seek shelter in burrows (Gherardi et al 1999, Ilheu et al 2003, Penn 1943. In Pine Lake, the reproductive cycle of P. clarkii is similar to the pattern reported for many populations of the species (Mueller 2007a). During the enclosure experiments, the size of winning P. clarkii was typically 240 mm CL.…”

“…If the non-native P. clarkii is indeed displacing the native P. leniusculus at Pine Lake a s reported by Mueller (2007b), the results of the present study suggest that additional mechanisms besides shelter competition are likely contributing to the process. Some examples of possible mechanisms include competition for food (Hill and Lodge 1999), interaction at juvenile life stages (Mather and Stein 1993), and differences in life history strategies (Gherardi 2006, Mueller 2007a. Indirect facilitation effects are another.…”
