Reproductive dynamics of the grooved tiger prawn, Penaeus semisulcatus, in the north-western Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia

Abstract: The reproductive cycle of female P. semisulcatus was investigated in the region north of Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria from August 1983 to March 1985. Approximately 1750 trawls were carried out over 21 monthly sampling cruises, and 13 748 females were examined. The minimum size at maturity was 29 mm carapace length (CL), and 50% of the population were mature at 39 mm CL. The proportion of females which had mated increased sharply above 34 mm CL with a maximum of 80% of females inseminated in the si… Show more

“…That of the same spp harvested from the Gulf of Carpentaria CROCOS, 1987 was even higher (17.0 cm) than that reported by KING, 1995 . Both reported estimates were comparable with each other, considering the geographic and temporal separation of their studies.…”

“…The occurrence of breeding peaks followed by recruitment peaks indicates fitness in the population (Crocos, 1987). Crocos and van der Velde (1995) proposed the term "effective spawning" when the reproductive activity of a given population contributes to the following recruitment within that same population.…”

“…The proportion of mature females increases with increasing size in M. japonicus (Minagawa et al 2000), P. semisulcatus (Crocos 1987a), P. esculentus (Crocos 1987b), Metapenaeus dalli (Potter et al 1989), M. endeavouri, and M. ensis (Crocos et al 2001). On the contrary, according to Courtney et al (1995), in .…”
