Population biology of the commercially exploited shrimp Artemesia longinaris (Decapoda: Penaeidae) in an upwelling region in the Western Atlantic: comparisons at different latitudes

Abstract: This study characterized the population biology of the dendrobranchiate penaeid shrimp Artemesia longinaris Spence Bate, 1888, focusing on population structure, sexual maturity, reproductive period and recruitment, and comparing reproductive parameters of a different populations along western South Atlantic..Samples were collected monthly from March, 2008 to February, 2010 in Macaé, northern coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, a region influenced by the Cabo Frio upwelling. There was a significantly higher … Show more

“…Length-associated sexual dimorphism is common in X. kroyeri , with females reaching larger size (Branco, 2005; Santos et al ., 2013; Lopes et al ., 2014; Castilho et al ., 2015). Other penaeids follow the same pattern: Farfantepenaeus subtilis (Silva, 2016), F. brasiliensis and F. paulensis (Leite Jr & Petrere Jr, 2006), and Artemesia longinaris (Sancinetti et al ., 2015). This reflects a reproductive strategy, as larger size for females allows for larger gonads, higher fertility and production of more eggs (Gab-Alla et al ., 1990).…”

“…Artemesia longinaris has continuous recruitment off Macaé coast (Sancinetti et al, 2015). On the other hand, Castilho et al (2007), in a 5.5-year study in Ubatuba, found juveniles in low numbers during almost all months over the entire study period and interpreted recruitment as episodic, since there was no apparent correlation between the percentages of mature females and immature individuals.…”

“…Sancinetti et al (2014Sancinetti et al ( , 2015 showed that the environmental conditions (temperature and salinity) in the Macaé region differ from those that are usually found in tropical regions. As a result of the influence of the Cabo Frio upwelling, the low mean temperatures and the high nutrient concentrations throughout the year create conditions resembling the cool-temperate southern part of the continent (Sancinetti et al, 2015).…”
