Reproductive Decisions for Women With HIV: Motherhood's Role in Envisioning a Future

Abstract: Cultural influences might exert more influence on HIV-positive women's reproductive choices than HIV-related conditions. In this article we report on grounded theory research on how women with HIV made reproductive decisions during a time of transition from HIV as potentially fatal to mothers and newborns to its current status as an often controllable chronic illness. Eighty HIV-positive women of childbearing age in three United States cities were interviewed, and the interviews were analyzed using grounded th… Show more

“…Data were collected over the course of 7 years, although the study was cross-sectional, rather than longitudinal. This study reflects a departure from the extant research on fertility desires and parenthood among individuals living with HIV because much of the previous research emphasizes HIV positive mothers only [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. The present study adds to this literature by providing fertility perspectives among HIV discordant couples who wish to conceive.…”

“…However, the desire for children among HIV positive individuals varies widely by study and by region [12]. Much of the research on fertility desires and/or reproduction among individuals with HIV/AIDS has assessed women who are HIV seropositive [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20], with particular attention to fertility desires among sub-Saharan African populations [10,[21][22][23][24][25][26], where the majority of individuals with HIV worldwide reside [1].…”

“…For many minority women with HIV, motherhood is one of the few socially valued roles available to them. 29 Problematically then, experiences of stigma can compromise the fulfillment of this role. In some instances, participants described greater acceptance over time of their HIV status by family members.…”

“…Currently, the mother-to-child transmission of HIV has decreased because of the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy (Teerawattananon, Vos, Tangcharoensathien, & Mugford, 2005). Previous research evidence has shown that information about advances in antiretroviral drugs therapy and the low risk of the mother-to-child transmission of HIV that this therapy entails positively has influenced infected women's decisions to become pregnant or to carry their pregnancies to term (Barnes & Murphy, 2009;Cooper, Harries, Myer, Orner, & Bracken, 2007).…”
