Amphidromous gobies represent a substantial part of freshwater fish diversity throughout islands of the Indo-Pacific region. They display a marine pelagic phase during several months before recruiting in rivers. Understanding the relationship between larval traits and environmental conditions is a major challenge for the evaluation of a spatial scale of connectivity and populations' dynamics, especially in a climate change context. In this study, the larval traits of Sicyopterus lagocephalus were examined and related to the sea surface temperature (SST), over three consecutive years in La R eunion Island (Mascarene archipelago). The pelagic larval duration (PLD, range from 96 to 293 days), the size-at-recruitment (range from 26.5 to 37 mm TL) and the larval growth rate (range from 0.112 to 0.293 mmÁday À1 TL) varied seasonally depending on hatching date. The larval growth rate was inversely correlated to the fluctuations of PLD and size. Larvae living in high sea water temperatures exhibited a faster growth, shorter PLDs and smaller sizes-at-recruitment than those living in cool water temperatures. The instantaneous daily growth was assessed by the study of otolith increment widths. The daily growth was not linear throughout larval life and was positively correlated to SST. We showed high amplitude of PLD periodic fluctuations (170.39 AE 43.75 days) related to temperature (12.8% PLD drop per degree), which could affect dispersal and induce intermittent connectivity between distant populations. This high plasticity of larval traits is likely to be advantageous to respond to the wide range of environmental conditions encountered throughout the species distribution range.

ABSTRACT:The mudskipper Boleophthalmus boddarti is an amphibious fish widely distributed in the mudflat regions in Asia, but its reproductive biology was poorly stydied. This study was conducted in the Tran De, Soc Trang, Vietnam, from March 2013 to February 2014, to investigate reproductive parameters of B. boddarti. Data analysis based on a total of 360 collected fish (188 females and 172 males) suggest that the sex ratio of this mudskipper was not significantly different between dry and wet seasons. This fish was a multiple reproducer and spawned in the wet season with a peak spawning in three main months of this season (August to October) as difference stages of oocytes were observed in the ovaries. The male B. boddarti released sperms during the reproductive season since different type of spermatogonia were found in stage V testis sections. This fish reached 11.52 cm total length at first sex maturation and was high fecundity (9,800-33,800 eggs), indicating a possible adaptation of this species to the monsoonal climate. The understanding of the reproductive biology of B. boddarti provides useful knowledge of its reproductive adaptation to the mudflat toward sustainable management in the study region.

Amphidromous fish species reproduce in rivers, and their larvae immediately drift to the sea after hatching. Most of these larvae survive in freshwater for a few days only, rapidly reaching sea water is thus essential. Being of small size, especially among species of the Sicydiinae subfamily, the larvae possess poor swimming abilities; their drift dynamics is considered to be mainly passive and influenced by flow conditions. The influence of daily fluctuations in flow regime on Sicyopterus lagocephalus (Sicydiinae) larval drift patterns was studied using drift nets at three sites along the dammed Langevin River in Reunion Island. The river flow was stable at the upstream site when frequent anthropogenic river flow fluctuations were observed at the two sites downstream to the dam. Weak diel larval drift dynamics were detected at the upstream site and the first site under anthropogenic river flow conditions. In contrast, larval drift dynamics at the most downstream site was strongly influenced by anthropogenic daily fluctuations of discharge: the abundance of drifting larvae increased with peaks of discharge, regardless of the time. As higher mortality rates of drifting larvae were observed during discharge peaks, the benefit of a more rapid travel to the ocean associated with these peaks should be lower than expected. It is concluded that peaks of discharge increase the number of larvae drifting to the sea probably due to higher physical constraints on the egg clutches, but also decrease the chance of survival for larvae that may be nonfully developed.
