Reproductive biology of the mudskipper Boleophthalmus boddarti in Soc Trang

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The mudskipper Boleophthalmus boddarti is an amphibious fish widely distributed in the mudflat regions in Asia, but its reproductive biology was poorly stydied. This study was conducted in the Tran De, Soc Trang, Vietnam, from March 2013 to February 2014, to investigate reproductive parameters of B. boddarti. Data analysis based on a total of 360 collected fish (188 females and 172 males) suggest that the sex ratio of this mudskipper was not significantly different between dry and wet seasons. This fi… Show more

“…For example, in Imo estuary, Nigeria, Periophthalmus barbarus spawned mainly in May [ 39 ]; in Malaysia’s coastal mudflat, the reproductive season of Periophthalmodon schlosseri was from April to October [ 40 ]. Several of gobies living in the estuarine in the Mekong Delta also spawned in the wet season due to nutrient richness in the dry season, namely Pseudaporcyptes elongatus [ 41 ], Boleophthalmus boddarti [ 42 ], Parapocryptes serperaster [ 8 ], Trypauchen vagina [ 43 ], and Stigmatogobius pleurostigma [ 44 ].…”

“…There are two possible ways for recruitment from the southern to the eastern populations. First, the currents in the Gulf of Thailand move from south to east in May to September (Sojisuporn et al, 2010), which includes the spawning season of mudskippers from August to October (Quang et al, 2016). Second, the planktonic larvae of the fish may be transported in ship ballast water, for vessels moving from the Songkla port (in the southern part of the Gulf) to the Map Ta Put and Laem Chabang ports (in the eastern part of the Gulf).…”

“…The percentage of frequency of male and female mudskipper IV GML in each species showed a percentage of about 20.69%. The fish spawning season coincides with the rainy season, although local conditions also influence the spawning peaks (Sakamoto et al 2015;Quang et al 2015). The rainy season provides advantages with the availability of sufficient food for larvae and fish fry for survival and development (Siby et al 2009).…”
