Summary Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro is an invasive species in the Patos Lagoon system in South Brazil. The aim of the study was to document the expansion of the occurrence range of A. pantaneiro in southern Brazil and to analyze the diet and food feeding overlap with the two native species Oligosarcus robustus and O. jenynsii. Occurrence data were based on fish collections databases and collected material. Fish for the stomach analysis were captured in the Jacuí and Sinos rivers from 2007 to 2009 by gillnetting and electrofishing. Food uptake was quantified by frequency of occurrence and relative abundance of the prey items. Food niche overlap was estimated by the Pianka Index. Database records indicated a rapid expansion of the occurrence range in all principal basins of the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Food niche overlap was greatest between A. pantaneiro and O. robustus (Ojk = .970). Both species fed predominantly on small Characids. O. jenynsii ingested predominantly insects and crustaceans and, consequently, had low food niche overlap when compared with the two other species. Results indicate that the expansion of A. pantaneiro occurrence range may principally affect O. robustus populations.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the structure of the fish assemblage in the ten years following the closing of the lake of the Itá Hydroelectric Power Plant. Seasonal collections were conducted from 2001 to 2010. During this period, 44,834 fish were captured, totaling 3,818.01 kg, among 8 orders, 24 families and 84 species. In general, profound changes were not observed in the fish assemblage in the ten years after the formation of the Itá lake. Few species changed in dominance over time, while many were rare in the environment. The ichthyofauna in the reservoir was dominated by small and medium size opportunist species that conduct short or no migratory movements. Among the most abundant, six species were responsible for more than 50% of the numeric representation: Steindachnerina brevipinna, Astyanax fasciatus, Apareiodon affinis, Hypostomus isbrueckeri, Iheringichthys labrosus and Loricariichthys anus. The increase in the representation of the later species stood out. The biomass was dominated by Steindachneridion scriptum, Prochilodus lineatus, I. laborsus, Schizodon nasutus, Hoplias malabaricus, Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro, Hoplias lacerdae, H. isbrueckeri and L. anus. Despite the presence of large migrators in the region of the reservoir, their vulnerability was revealed by the low numeric abundance and accidental capture. The k-dominance curve of numerical abundance and biomass indicates a moderately disturbed community, in which the representation of small species was also important to the amounts of biomass.Keywords: dam, ichthyofauna, southern Brazil, temporal variation, Itá.Dinâmica da estrutura da comunidade íctica ao longo de dez anos da formação do reservatório da usina hidrelétrica no Alto Rio Uruguai Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a estrutura da assembleia de peixes nos dez anos seguintes ao fechamento do lago da Usina Hidrelétrica de Itá. Para isto, foram realizadas coletas com periodicidade sazonal no período compreendido entre 2001 e 2010. Durante o período de estudo, foram capturados 44834 peixes, totalizando 3818,01 kg, distribuídos em 8 ordens, 24 famílias e 84 espécies. De uma forma geral, a assembleia de peixes não mostrou alterações profundas nos dez anos após a formação do lago de Itá. Poucas espécies alternam-se na dominância ao longo do tempo, enquanto muitas mostraram-se como raras no ambiente. A ictiofauna do reservatório foi dominada por espécies oportunistas, de pequeno e médio porte e que realizam curtos ou nenhum movimento migratório. Entre as mais abundantes, seis espécies foram responsáveis por mais de 50% da representatividade numérica, sendo elas: Steindachnerina brevipinna, Astyanax fasciatus, Apareiodon affinis, Hypostomus isbrueckeri, Iheringichthys labrosus e Loricariichthys anus. Effects of reservoirs water level variations on fish recruitment

The construction of hydroelectric power plants has many social and environmental impacts. Among them, the impacts on fish communities, which habitats are drastically modified by dams, with consequences across the ecosystem. This study aimed to assess the influence of water level (WL) variations in the reservoirs of the Itá and Machadinho hydroelectric plants on the recruitment of fish species from the upper Uruguay River in southern Brazil. The data analyzed resulted from the WL variation produced exclusively by the hydroelectric plants generation and were collected between the years 2001 and 2012. The results showed significant correlations between the abundance of juvenile fish and the hydrological parameters only for some reproductive guilds. The species that spawn in nests showed, in general, a clear preference for the stability in the WL of the reservoirs, while the species that spawn in macrophytes or that release demersal eggs showed no significant correlation between the abundance of juvenile fish and hydrological parameters. A divergence of results between the two reservoirs was observed between the species that release semi-dense eggs; a positive correlation with a more stable WL was only observed in the Machadinho reservoir. This result can be driven by a wider range of WL variation in Machadinho reservoir.Keywords: Hydrological Parameters, Itá, Juveniles, Machadinho, Reproduction, Uruguay River.A construção de usinas hidrelétricas implica em diversos impactos sociais e ambientais. Dentre esses, o impacto causado sobre a comunidade de peixes, cujos habitats são drasticamente modificados pelas barragens, causam consequências em todo o ecossistema. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da variação dos níveis de água dos reservatórios das usinas hidrelétricas de Itá e Machadinho sobre o recrutamento das espécies de peixes do alto rio Uruguai, sul do Brasil. Os dados analisados resultaram da variação de nível de água decorrente exclusivamente da operação da usina e foram coletados entre os anos de 2001 e 2012. Os resultados mostraram correlações significativas entre a abundância dos juvenis de peixes e os parâmetros hidrológicos apenas para determinadas guildas reprodutivas. As espécies que desovam em ninhos mostraram, em geral, uma clara preferência pela estabilidade do nível de água dos reservatórios, enquanto que as espécies que desovam em macrófitas ou que liberam ovos demersais não mostraram correlação significativa entre a abundância de juvenis com os parâmetros hidrológicos. Uma divergência de resultados entre os dois reservatórios foi observada entre as espécies que liberam ovos semi-densos, onde apenas no reservatório de Machadinho houve correlação positiva com a maior estabilidade do nível de água. Esse resultado pode ser motivado pela maior amplitude de variação do nível de água no reservatório de Machadinho quando comparado com o de Itá.
