REPRODUCTION AND LARVAL REARING OF SANDFISH (Holothuria scabra)

Abstract: The natural stock of sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (known as sandfish) has been declining in both population and size, making it difficult to collect broodstock and juvenile sandfishes for aquaculture. This research aims to evaluate the reproduction of domesticated broodstock (F-1) and performance of the juveniles (F-2). Broodstock were reared in two rectangular concrete tanks with a dimension of 190 x 290 x 70 cm3. There were 12 individuals (7 males and 5 females) of broodstock (F-1) with total length and me… Show more

“…The Stichopodidae contains diatoms, algae, benthos, and inorganic compounds such as inorganic benthos in intestinal organs [25]. Benthos from culture contains phytoplankton, diatoms, melosiraceace, Naviculaceae, Nitzschiaceae, and zooplankton [11]. Benthos contains protein, fat and can be used as feed for the growth and development of gonads [10].…”

“…Bentos, cultured in a concrete tank, provides a tremendous growth to seed of sea cucumber, H. scabra. That benthos contains phytoplankton from the diatoms class and melosiraceace family; Naviculaceae; Nitzschiaceae, and zooplankton from the family Acartiidae [11]. However, there was rare information on the application of seaweed Sargassum sp.…”

“…Tinggi persentase kelangsungan hidup pada perlakuan A diduga terjadi karena kepadatan tebar juvenil yang tergolong rendah. Padat tebar yang ideal saat pendederan juvenil teripang yaitu 500/m 2 (Sembiring, et al, 2018). Padat tebar yang rendah menyebabkan kompetisi mencari makan dan ruang lebih baik sehingga dapat meningkatkan kelangsungan hidup teripang (Magcanta et al, 2021).…”

“…However, as one of the sea cucumber exporters country, Indonesia is still hampered by the problem of seeding and cultivation and dependence on wild seeds. One of them is sandfish (Holothuria scabra); Indonesia successfully bred even though its juvenile survival rate and growth rate are still low [2].…”
