Reproducibility in Echocardiographic Two‐ and Three‐Dimensional Mitral Valve Assessment

Abstract: Three-dimensional assessment of MVP was superior to 2DTEE, although the accuracy of both 3DTEE and 2DTEE was found to be lower than previously published. 3D MVP assessment is less operator dependent than 2DTEE evaluation. Although validity has been demonstrated before, we provide evidence that 3DTEE is reproducible among 15 observers and is a reliable method for MVP evaluation.

“…As for 2DE, a high prevalence of inter-operator discordance in terms of grading is widely described in the literature [16], mostly in the presence of severe regurgitation. A comprehensive, multiparametric evaluation with a preference for quantitative parameters only has proven to increase concordance [11].…”

“…Standard modality for mitral valve imaging pre-, post-and intraoperatively actually is transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) [2,13,14]. One major concern about TEE is operator dependency and reproducibility of echocardiographic results [15]. Besides TEE, CT has been described for assessment of the mitral valve anatomy for patients with normal renal function that can be harmed with contrast medium.…”

“…Three-dimensional TEE revolutionized the ability to visualize MV anatomy in vivo with definitive advantages over flaccid heart examination made by surgeons. Compared to 2D-TEE, 3D-TEE is less operator dependent because the entire MV can be visualized in a single view, consenting simultaneous examination of both leaflets from either the left ventricular or the left atrial perspective [20].…”
