The problem of controlling three-phase series active power filters (series APF) is addressed in the presence of nonlinear loads. In previous works, the control design for series APF is generally based on standard models that assume the involved magnetic coil to be linear. In reality, the magnetic characteristics of these components are nonlinear. In this paper, a new model for series APF load system, taking into account for the nonlinearity of coil characteristics, is developed. Based on the new model, a nonlinear adaptive controller is developed, using the backstepping design. The control objectives is twofold: (i) compensating for the harmonic and disturbed voltages components at the point of common coupling, this objective is referred to network voltage quality; and (ii) regulating the inverter DC capacitor voltage. Moreover, the controller is made adaptive for compensating the uncertainty on the switching loss power. The performances of the proposed adaptive controller are formally analyzed using tools from the Lyapunov stability and average theory. The supremacy of the proposed controller with respect to standard control solution is illustrated through simulation. Indeed, the presence of these disturbances leads to problems of synchronization with line voltage, responsible for systems malfunctions. Moreover, the nonlinear load contributes strongly to generating disturbing voltage components. In fact, the circulation of current harmonics components through the line conductors generates additional voltage distortions at the point of common coupling (PCC). These voltage distortions are manifested by flickers, dips, interruptions and voltage harmonics, which are harmful for B A.

In this paper, a new oriented control model for SAPF-load system, taking into account for the nonlinearity of coil characteristics, is developed. The control objective is twofold: (i) compensating for the current harmonics and the reactive power absorbed by the nonlinear load; (ii) regulating the inverter DC capacitor voltage. To this end, based on the new model, a nonlinear controller is developed, using the backstepping technical design. It is therefore able to ensure good performances over a wide range of variation of the load current. The performances of the proposed adaptive controller are formally analyzed using tools from the Lyapunov stability and the averaging theory. The curve fitting of magnetizing characteristics of self excited induction generators (SEIG) resulting airgap voltage (V g ) with magnetising current (I m ) is crucial for performance analysis of such machines using design tools. The magnetisation characteristic may be obtained using the B -H curve of the core material. An appropriate curve fitting technique/regression analysis is employed to represent V g -I m curve from which V g -X m curve can be derived. There is wide literature on approximation of magnetization curves of variety of materials. Accurate analysis of a magnetization curve, or the B -H characteristic, has always posed problems for electrical engineers dealing with machine design. The problem has been to find a single function to represent the wide range from the origin to saturation with a minimum error over the whole range. Moreover, such a function should be mathematically simple for easy application. In this paper, different techniques are critically compared to guide the designers on a right approach with special reference to SEIG.
