Reporter-Embedded SERS Tags from Gold Nanorod Seeds: Selective Immobilization of Reporter Molecules at the Tip of Nanorods

Abstract: Reporter-embedded (RE) tags are a new generation of sensitive, stable surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) tags with Raman reporters embedded between gold nanoparticle (NP) cores and gold (or silver) shells. Most of the reported RE tags have been designed using Au nanospheres as a seed material. Herein, we investigated the synthesis and SERS properties of AuNR/reporter/Ag tags by using gold nanorod (AuNR) seeds with anisotropic physical and optical features. Several highlighted points were discovered, incl… Show more

“…AuNRs are one of the most efficient SERRS substrates because their continuous LSPR can be easily adjusted to match the wildly used near-infrared incidence laser (785 nm), thus not only considerably improving the SERRS activity but also reducing background autouorescence and sample damage for bioanalysis applications. 38,39 In this study, 75 nm rod-shaped AuNRs were fabricated via a modied seed-mediated approach according to our previous work. 36 As shown in Fig.…”

“…Various nanostructured materials are studied extensively as they involve light–matter interaction in small scale where quantum mechanical effects become relevant. [ 62,87–97 ] Achieving smaller gap widths has been a long‐pursued goal in the realization of SERS substrates. Reports, however, indicate that reducing gap width for SERS applications is not always beneficial.…”

“…4−6 They perfectly combine the superior properties of classic gold and silver NPs. On one hand, they have uniform morphology and tunable shapes (sphere, 7 rod, 8,9 star, 10 etc.) taking advantage of the Au NP cores with wellcontrolled morphologies.…”
