Replacement of soya bean meal with cashew nut meal as an alternative protein source in the diet of tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to replace soya bean meal (SBM) with cashew nut meal (CNM) in the diet of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). Five isonitrogenous (30% CP) and isolipidic (6% CL) diets, CNM0 to CNM4, were prepared replacing SBM at 0%, 12.5%, 25%, 37.5% and 50% with CNM. The feeding trial was conducted in FRP digestibility tanks of 150 L capacity for 60 days. Twenty tilapia fry (20.56 ± 0.05 g) were stocked in each tank. The final weight, weight gain and weight gain% of tilapia that received the CNM4 … Show more

“…The lowest SGPT were found in fish fed with 15 g/kg tau, similar result was also obtained for yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco fed with 10.9 g/kg taurine (Li et al, 2016). SGPT and SGOT activities of pangasius were at a safe level and even similar/lower than the values reported in healthy freshwater catfish C. batrachus (SGOT 81.70-87.90 U/L; SGPT 64.90-70.10 U/L) (Rather, 2015) and tilapia (SGPT 1.45-1.58 U/L; SGOT 20.7-24.2 U/L) (Pradhan, Divi, Dileep, Peter, & Sankar, 2020). ALKP is an important enzyme that signifies the status of the liver and gall bladder.…”

“…In recent years, many studies have shown positive results in the total or partial replacement of SBM with various plant ingredients in the diet of different sh species, including tilapia (Fadel et al 2017;Khieokhajonkhet et al 2021;Pradhan et al 2020). In this research, the results of the feeding trial indicate that PM150 and SH can be incorporated (in replacement of SBM) into a feed for tilapia juveniles without affecting their performance.…”

“…However, the high consumption of SBM caused a dramatic price jump from $190 per metric ton to over $601 per metric ton from 2002 to 2022 (IndexMundi 2022). Thus, after FM, SBM has become the most expensive ingredient in sh feed (Pradhan et al 2020). Also, its cultivation is related to an increase in the carbon footprint because of its importation from producing countries to consuming countries (Tallentire et al 2018).…”
