Dietary taurine improved growth performance, nutrient utilization, and antioxidant enzyme activities in pangasius Pangasianodon hypophthalmus

Abstract: Taurine is a β sulphonic amino acid and is conditionally essential for many fish species. In the present study, the effect of dietary taurine (tau) on Pangasianodon hypophthalmus fry (initial mean weight 0.8 ± 0.6 g) was evaluated by feeding six isonitrogenous (370 g/kg crude protein) and isolipidic (100 g/kg crude lipid) casein-based purified diets with graded levels of tau at 0 (basal diet), 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 g/kg feed. Fish were randomly stocked in triplicate groups in 100 L plastic tubs and fed to appa… Show more

“…Taurine is a β-sulfur amino acid that may act as an antioxidant in living organisms [ 70 , 71 ]. In different experimental systems, taurine has been shown to act as a direct antioxidant with a scavenging effect on oxygen-free radicals and as an antioxidant to prevent changes in ion transport and membrane permeability due to oxidant damage [ 72 ].…”

“…In order to have feasible productivity and profit, their nutritional needs must be met [ 5 ]. Thus, more efforts are still recommended to ensure the nutritional requirements of striped catfish [ 6 ]. Under the current circumstances of the high cost of ingredients which limit the profitability of finfish farming, it becomes necessary to formulate high-quality feeds with reasonable prices without affecting the nutritional value of fish feeds [ 7 – 9 ].…”
