Replacement of corn grain by brown rice grain in dairy cow rations: Nutritional and productive effects

Abstract: The use of brown rice grain as corn grain replacer in dairy cow diets was investigated. The following treatments were evaluated: zero, 33, 63, and 100%. The experimental diets were iso in protein, energy and fiber levels. Eight multiparus Jersey cows were used. A replicated Latin square experimental design was applied. The inclusion of brown rice had no effect (P > 0.05) on dry mater intake and their constituents, apparent digestibility, production and milk composition, feed efficiency and blood chemistry prof… Show more

“…starch sources in the feed could decrease the DMI [24,25], we observed no difference in the DMI, even though the pro portion of starch was higher in the rice grains than in the corn grains used in the present study (rice starch, 78.1% DM; corn starch, 71.5% DM, data not shown). This is consistent with the previous studies that have reported that the DMI did not exhibit significant differences in dairy cattle when using rice grains instead of corn grains in the feed containing approxi mately 31% DM [3] and 36% DM [22]. Studies substituting corn grains with rice grains have been carried out not only in ruminants but also in monogastric ani mals [2628].…”

“…However, there is a limited information on the application of PR in the diet of sheep. Grain of brown rice was reported to be an alternative energy feedstuff that can be used in dairy cow diets, totally replacing corn grain, without any negative effect on the animal health, feed intake, digestibility, milk yield and composition [30]. As the hull part comprised of small amounts of starch and mostly non-starch polysaccharides such as cellulose and hemicellulose, dehulling is the best option to supply the optimal nutritive value for cattle.…”

“…Nevertheless, in Korean early fattening stage steering diets for higher beef marbling, there are no findings regarding the use of rice as a corn replacement up to 33% DM. Rice as an alternative to corn for energy-rich diets can be essential for integrated crop and livestock production systems [10], balancing and boosting Hanwoo cattle productivity. Including energy-rich grains in fattening TMR diets can affect productivity and rumen fermentation characteristics [2].…”
