“…It is suggested that many more mice might be found to be in an early stage of leukemia earlier if more sensitive diag nostic methods were applied as in human cases. Also, several prophylactic treatment with noncytotoxic agents such as BCG [21], Streptococcus pyogenes preparation OK-432 [1] or Poly A:U [4,5] except Freund's adjuvant [3] were clearly effective only when their administrations were started sev eral months earlier than that time of onset of the leukemia within the groups. There fore, the treatment with PTZ in this report could be designated as mainly therapeutic rather than prophylactic for the groups but not for the individuals.…”

Minimal modifications of the experimental conditions may change the effectiveness of BCG (11,25,31). For instance, the age of the experimen tal animals may be a critical factor.…”

“…Neoplastic diseases in man are often been reported to delay viral carcinoaccompanied by defective cellular genesis (Lemonde et al 1971, Ankerst & immunity as indicated by tests Jonsson 1972, Ungaro et al 1973 as well demonstrating decreased cutaneous as chemical carcinogenesis (Piessens et al delayed hypersensitivity or impaired ability 1971, Giunta et al 1974. “…Recently we became interested in Such attempts have included administra-reports of clinical regressions of epidermal tion of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) in squamous cell carcinomas, basal cell cases of malignant lesions such as carcinomas, precancerous skin keratoses, leukemia (Lemonde et al 1971 &Ungaro andoral leukoplakias, resulting from cellet al 1973). Experimentally, BCG has mediated hypersensitivity induced by the O300-9777/79/O30147-10S02.50/0 c 1979 Munksgaard, Copenhagen chemically simple allergen dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) (Klein 1968, Weintraub & Lagasse 1973.…”
