The aim of this study was to determine coping strategies which may represent important personal resources and have a buffering effect in preventing mental health problems in parents of children with Down syndrome. Forty-nine parents of children with Down syndrome completed self-administrated measures of psychological and physical health problems, and coping behaviour, using several established measuring instruments. According to the hierarchical regression analyses, parents who often used regenerative coping strategies, and who experienced positive personal changes in terms of posttraumatic growth suffered from less anxiety and somatisation symptoms, whereas dysfunctional coping was the best predictor for parental depression and physical symptoms. Regenerative coping mediated between parental tendency to recognize their emotional needs and somatisation symptoms. Intervention programs for families of children with Down syndrome may benefit if they address parents' reflection about their feelings, foster posttraumatic growth processes, and impart knowledge about long-term regenerative coping strategies.

Os primeiros anos do bebê são períodos sensíveis em que a disponibilidade dos pais é necessária para o desenvolvimento infantil. Estudos indicam que a detecção da deficiência física na criança aumenta o risco de depressão parental. Evidenciar suas causas e consequências para os pais e para a qualidade do vínculo que estabelecem com seus filhos é fundamental para fornecer os cuidados necessários a essas famílias. Este artigo revisa e discute a literatura acerca da depressão em pais de crianças com deficiência física nos últimos cinco anos. Os termos "disability", "depression", "parents" e "physical disability" foram utilizados nas bases PsycNET, Scopus, Web of Science, BVS e PEP-Web. Foram selecionadas 20 publicações. Os resultados revelaram que pesquisas quantitativas e transversais predominam, assim como o estudo das variações em relação à gravidade da deficiência. Quando detectada, a depressão foi frequentemente moderada, com aspectos singulares como culpa e remorso mediando sua probabilidade de ocorrência. Poucos estudos exploram como o sofrimento dos pais pode incidir sobre o aumento do grau de incapacitação motora da deficiência. Concluiu-se que o tempo transcorrido após o diagnóstico parece um fator preponderante, mas que agrega outros como reações ao diagnóstico e modos de elaboração. Pesquisas longitudinais futuras são necessárias para essa verificação.

[Purpose] This study aimed to establish a scientific and clinical basis for the development of a method for the early diagnosis of cumulative trauma disorders experienced by mothers of disabled children. [Subjects and Methods] Ten volunteer mothers who came to a rehabilitation centre for the treatment of their children were included in this study. Surface electromyography measurements were taken during maximum isometric contraction through the extensor muscle motor point of the wrist of the mothers, and hand grip strength was measured. [Results] In the electromyography measurements, the mean electromyogram signal value obtained from the wrist extensor muscle motor point of the mothers of the healthy children was 0.3 ± 0.08 mV and the crude handgrip strength was 28.5 ± 2.08 kg. In mothers of rehabilitated children, the crude hand grip strength was 7.0 ± 1.1 kg, and the mean electromyogram signal value from the extender muscle motor point was 0.1 ± 0.02 mV. There was a significant difference between the mothers with healthy and disabled children with respect to handgrip strength and electromyography. [Conclusion] The result obtained may be important in the development of health protection programs. Further research may lead to the development of protective rehabilitation programs and the improvement of social rights for mothers with disabled children.
