Repeatability of the amplitude of accommodation measured by a new generation autorefractor

Abstract: SignificanceThis is the first study to validate the repeatability of objective measurements of amplitude of accommodation (AA) using the TONOREF III (NIDEK Co., Ltd., Japan), which can measure the AA in 30 seconds. PurposeTo evaluate the repeatability of objective measurements of AA using the TONOREF III and explored the association between objectively measured AA and factors, including age, sex, spherical equivalent, baseline pupil size and pupil size change during accommodation. MethodsThis cross-sectional s… Show more

“…Gislen et al [ 33 ] reported that the underwater visual acuity of European children improved after they engaged in training sessions to constrict their pupils underwater. In addition, Weng et al recently reported that the change in pupillary diameter was correlated with AA [ 34 ]. However, the number of subjects in Weng’s study was small (35 subjects), and the interaction or dependence between age and the change in pupillary diameter is not yet elucidated [ 34 ].…”

However, the number of subjects in Weng’s study was small (35 subjects), and the interaction or dependence between age and the change in pupillary diameter is not yet elucidated [ 34 ]. The current study is the first study enrolling a large number of cases to reveal that pupillary diameter is strongly correlated with AA and that individual differences are involved in presbyopia, independent of age.…”

“…This could have a greater effect on a woman's accommodative function, since there are robust gender-related differences in the endocannabinoid system and metabolism of the drug. 69 Nevertheless, the females also showed lower mean velocities in the baseline condition, and while previous data has suggested lower objectively-measured amplitudes of accommodation in women, 70 there is no agreement with regard to gender differences in accommodative function. Accordingly, this question remains unresolved.…”

“…The measurement was completed after a maximum of 30 s, and the device reduced the measurement time in cases of slow or poor accommodative response. Repeatability and reproducibility of this particular type of Nidek autorefractors in AA measurement [16], as well as the association between the pupil size and AA [17], have already been evaluated; thus, these aspects were not assessed.…”
