Reorientation of π-conjugated molecules on few-layer MoS2 films

Abstract: We show that small π-conjugated molecules adopt a lying-down orientation when deposited on few-layer MoS2 with horizontally oriented layers. In contrast, for vertically aligned MoS2 layers, DIP molecules are arranged in a standing-up manner.

“…Pre-deposited platinum on the substrate and the selenium powder are placed next to each other in the center of a furnace. Recently, we used this method in preparing MoS2 thin films on different substrates with the possibility to control the layer alignment [19][20][21][22]. In this paper, we study how the selenization temperature, growth time and the thickness of an initial Pt layer affect the structural and electrical properties of as-prepared PtSe2 films.…”

“…VA MoS 2 layers are gaining particular interest due to their chemically reactive edges, which can be used for solar cells, water disinfection, water splitting, and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) . The spatial orientation of MoS 2 layers is important in determining the applications of this material. , Therefore, precise control over the growth orientations of these 2D TMD materials is critical to optimize their desired material properties and device functionalities.…”

“…In the case of the targeted hybrid van der Waals heteroepitaxy, the standing-up molecules represent the defects in molecular orientation that occur due to imperfections of the MoS 2 underlying substrate. The MoS 2 underlayer consists of grains with predominant horizontal orientation of the atomic layers. , However, grains with vertical orientation of MoS 2 layers may occur, inducing the standing-up orientation of the DIP molecules …”

“…A two-dimensional GIWAXS map obtained from the surface area close to the edge of the sample is shown in Figure b. The GIWAXS pattern shows the two principal Bragg reflections located at q = 0.38 Å –1 , which represent the 001 diffraction peaks of DIP for two different molecular orientations . In addition, an intense Yoneda peak is visible at q z = 0.02 Å –1 and a doubling of both 001 diffractions in the vicinity of q = 0.38 Å –1 for both molecular alignments.…”
