“…These observations do not exclude the possibility that hyponatra emia is a stimulus to an increase o f plasma renin concentration although earlier experiments show that if renin is stimulated in this way, the effect can be overcome by other factors [11]. Furthermore, in our patient, plasma renin concentration increased during a dialysis in which plasma sodium concentration also rose.…”

“…Beyond this, no further characterisation of the plasma material was attempted, although the more extensive stu dies of C a p e l li et al [17] suggest that the plasma material is in fact renin. Duplicate estimates of the concentration of renin-like enzyme in the plasma of an anephric woman using the slightly different tech niques of B row n et al [8] and C a p e l li et al [17] showed close agree ment [17], Enzymes indistinguishable from renin have been extracted from the salivary and adrenal glands and from the placenta, uterus and amniodc fluid [11,47,48], Renin may therefore be produced in these extrarenal sites and liberated into blood. Studies of the effect of nephrectomy suggest that the contribution from these extrarenal sources is normally small relative to that made by the kidney.…”

“…The octapeptide, angiotensinII, is made by the action of another enzyme (converting enzyme) on this decapeptide; all the pharmacological activity of the renin-angiotensin system resides in the octapeptide angiotensinII. The control of the system, which is probably through changes in secretion of renin, has been studied for many years (see Peart, 1965;Brown, Davies, Lever & Robertson, 1966;Vander, 1967). For example, a fall of renal arterial pressure rapidly induces secretion of renin (Skinner, McCubbin & Page, 1963;Regoli & Vane, 1966).…”

“…Massani et al (28) also reported high levels of plasma renin in patients with congestive heart failure, but there was a wide scatter in their data, and considerable overlap occurred between normal and experimental values. In a review Brown, Davies, Lever, and Robertson (29) stated that two distinct patterns have been observed in untreated congestive failure; the plasma renin was low and increased with diuretic therapy, or renin was high and fell with treatment. In the present study plasma renin was elevated in experimental heart failure (both low and high output) in all but two dogs with high output failure.…”
