Renal Resistive Index of Adult Healthy Dogs Submitted to Short-Term Whole-Body Vibration Exercise

Abstract: Exercises involving whole-body vibration are useful for stimulation and physical rehabilitation. However, it is necessary to verify its effects not only on musculoskeletal tissues but also on internal organs. This study aimed to investigate the influence of the whole-body vibration platform on the renal resistive index in healthy dogs. Ten clinically healthy dogs of different breeds, 6 males and 4 females, aged from 1.7-3.5 years (mean 2.1±0.6 SD) and weighing from 20.5-41 kg (mean 32.1±7.1 SD), were used. The… Show more

“…The dogs were subjected to 2-hour acclimatization and rest prior to the WBV sessions. The WBV sessions were done with the dog standing up on all 4 feet on a vibrating platform 11 with approximately length 92 cm, width 62 cm, height 16 cm, and frequency range from 0-100 Hz. 12 Dogs were assisted by a trained person during the training session in order to avoid locomotion.…”

“…8 However, very few studies related to effects of WBV on dogs were conducted. 11 Thus, the evolved neurophysiological mechanisms must be further studied in order to help developing WBV exercise programs. 1,3 Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the effects of WBV exercises on the hematology and serum biochemistry of adult healthy dogs based on a single protocol.…”

“…Studies regarding the effects of WBV in the dopplerfluxometry parameters were made in healthy dogs. The RI of the renal artery did not show significant variations after a single WBV session [10]. On the other hand, a significant increase of RI of the femoral artery was observed after single daily use of WBV for five consecutive days in dogs [23].…”

“…The WBV protocol used in this study was following previous studies using medium size dogs [10,23,24] since there are no other security protocols for dogs. The single session of WBV had benefits related to the cervix opening in female dogs diagnosed with metritis [22].…”
