Renal parenchymal resistance in patients with biopsy proven glomerulonephritis: Correlation with histological findings

Abstract: Renal Doppler ultrasound is increasingly used in nephrology for the evaluation of renovascular disease, allograft dysfunction, and chronic nephropathies. We compared intrarenal hemodynamic parameters to biopsy findings of glomerular sclerosis, tubular atrophy, interstitial fibrosis, crescents, arteriolosclerosis, and clinical variables in 100 patients. A positive correlation exists between renal function and percentage of glomerular sclerosis (P <0.01, r = 0.26), conversely a negative correlation exists betwee… Show more

“…Study done by Gigante et al (2016) on 100 biopsy proven GN including about 30 LN patients founded a significant correlation between RRI and age, serum creatinine, eGFR, % of glomerulosclerosis and of crescents and degree of arteriosclerosis .…”

“…In the past, we obtained interesting data about the early renal involvement in diabetic patients using Doppler US [42]. Very recently, histological findings were correlated with Doppler US parameters in patients with glomerulonephritis [43].…”

“…Current graft assessment methods include noninvasive, surrogate biomarkers like serum creatinine concentration, urea nitrogen and proteinuria, and Doppler intrarenal resistive index (DIRI) (Gigante et al, 2016; Nankivell and Kuypers, 2011). Although these biomarkers are commonly used to indicate biopsy, they are insensitive and non-specific with unclear diagnostic thresholds.…”
