Renal Hypertrophy Factor in Serum of Nephrectomized Rats, with Observations on Species Specificity

Abstract: Compensatory renal hypertrophy after unilateral nephrectomy is well known. Among several explanations for such an occurrence, a factor in the Serum of unilaterally nephrectomized rats that causes renal hypertrophy has been described (1-4). “…Subsequently a number of experiments involving parabiotic animals demonstrated that unilateral or bilateral nephrectomy in one animal resulted in renal hypertrophy of the other (Van Vroonhoren, Soler Mountesinos & Malt, 1972;Shames, Murphy & Berkowitz, 1976;Obertop & Malt, 1977;Van Urk, Malamud, Soler Mountesinos & Malt, 1978).
