“…This is similar to the results of other authors: in the Silicone Study Report 6 (1994), 59% of the detachments occurred within the first three months; Nawrocki et al (1993): 77.8% of detachments within the first months postoperatively, no detachment after 9 months; Franks & Leaver (1991): 81% within 6 months; Zilis et al (1989): all detachments within 8 weeks. The reason for the rapidity of the detachment could be residual or new traction that had been counteracted by the oil before its removal, especially in the anterior vitreous with reopening of preexisting breaks or formation of new retinal breaks.…”

“…It is known that silicone oil removal carries a certain risk of postoperative retinal detachment (McCuen 1985;Federman & Schubert 1988;Zilis et al 1989;Gonvers 1990;Hö ing et al 1991;Franks & Leaver 1991;Silicone Study Group 1994;Bodanowitz 1996). However, thorough analysis of this complication has rarely been performed.…”

“…6,[9][10][11][12][13] It is, however, generally accepted that where possible prompt removal of silicone oil will minimise its potential ocular side effects. This is not always desirable because of the risk of redetachment which has been reported in up to one in three patients 9 particularly those with complex previous vitreoretinal pathology.…”

“…After successful surgery with silicone oil instillation, the oil is removed from the eye in selected cases after a certain time to avoid oil associated complications like cataract, glaucoma, keratopathy and, eventually, reproliferations. However, these complications are often reported after silicone oil removal , Franks and Leaver 1991, Lucke et al 1990, Nawrocki et al 1993, Silicone Study Group 1994. One possible reason for the occurrence of these complications after oil removal could be a small amount of oil remaining in the eye.…”
