Removal of proteins from natural rubber with urea and its application to continuous processes

Abstract: The removal of proteins from natural rubber through a batch process was studied by the incubation of the rubber latex with urea in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Under suitable conditions, the total nitrogen content of deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR) decreased from 0.38 to 0.02 wt % after incubation for 10 min; this was similar to that of the rubber deproteinized with a proteolytic enzyme for 12 h. For applications, continuous incubation and centrifugation were individually investigated by the use… Show more

“…In Table , the relatively high total nitrogen content of the U‐DPNR may be partly attributed to traces of residual urea in the sample, as a complete removal of urea can be difficult . Also, some of the surface protein denatured by urea may have remained attached to the rubber particles and this may have contributed to a relatively high final nitrogen level.…”

“…Urea treatment and enzymatic treatment are equally effective and can reduce the total nitrogen content of rubber to a lower level than the other treatment methods. However, after a urea treatment, all urea must be removed, or high levels of residual nitrogen may be detected in the treated rubber as urea itself contains nitrogen . Also, the urea treatment does not actually break down proteins, but denatures them so that they are easier to wash away.…”
