“…More than 98% of Pb was removed by calcium alginate at an initial concentration of 0.1 mM. Salisu et al (2015) applied sodium alginate-graft-poly (methyl methacrylate) in the form of calcium cross-linked beads to remove Pb from aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 526 mg/g for concentrations ranging from 200 to 1000 mg/L.…”

“…The percentage grafting, G(%) decreased when the initiator amount was increased above 0.2g. This could be attributed to more free-radical generation that eventually may lead to premature termination (by coupling) of the growing radicals at higher concentration (16). It was observed that the highest percentage grafting was acheived at acrylic acid concentration of 5 g and KPS concentration of 0.2 g. It was also observed that the reaction reached to the optimum at a very short reaction time of 2 minutes.…”

“…Contamination of surface waters by toxic heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, As, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, etc. endangered humans and aquatic organisms (16). For example, lead can cause several disorders that include; renal damage, hepatic damage, central nervous system damage, and damage to the reproductive system (17).…”

“…Salisu et al [83] have documented studies on chemically induced graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers onto sodium alginate and their potential application in diverse areas. Recently, Salisu et al [84] prepared PMMA graft sodium alginate by radical polymerization using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The product was further cross-linked to form beads.…”
