Background: The application of the counter-torque technique has been proposed as a conservative and atraumatic alternative for the explantation of nonmobile dental implants. The objective of this report is to assess the performance of this technique in a large number of patients. Results: Three hundred and fifty-five patients were treated for the explantation of 749 nonmobile dental implants. The explantations were performed by the application of counter-torque to break the bone-implant interface. Successful implant explantation was achieved in 98.4% of the implants. The frequency of complications was 1.3%, most commonly related to the appearance of fissure lines at the implant neck. Conclusions: The counter-torque technique has a high success rate but is not exempt from complications, although at a very low rate.

Dental implant has been restoring the function and esthetics lost from missing tooth. However, biomechanical implant complications are the major cause of failing implants. Therefore, implant removal is one of the indispensable dental treatments. The 70-year-old male and 66-year-old female who had discomfort on posterior implants region came to Department of Periodontology. Conventional method using trephine bur and the new, nontraumatic method using a fixture removal kit were used for implant removal, respectively. Two different methods are commonly used for implant removal. Each has advantages and disadvantages; thus, the applied surgical method must consider a patient's intraoral condition, posttreatment plan, and the level of surgeon's skill and experience. In conclusion, strategically executing the most optimal implant removal method plays a pivotal role in maximizing the success rate of implant reinstallation that follows afterwards.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the failures of dental implants in Turkey and to investigate the complications, which may lead to implant loss. Study Design: The Systematic review was performed in accordance with PRISMA statement and Cochrane guidelines. PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, TUBITAK ULAKBIM databases were searched for both in English and Turkish up to 2015. Data on implant failure, demographic variables and outcomes were included. Nonclinical and animal reports were excluded. Search was conducted by two authors and conflicts were resolved by a third reader. Results: Seventeen reports were satisfied the inclusion criteria. In total, 1764 (51.19% female and 48.81% male) participants were included. A total of 4487 implants were used. Total implant success was 97.48% (61 early and 52 late failures) in a follow-up period for 42.71 ± 33.78 months. The failure reasons were infection (38.9%), lack of osseointegration (44.4%), implant fractures (5.8%), periimplantitis (1.76%), sensory disturbances (2.65%). Conclusion: Immediate and late implantation has similar failure rates and failure rates may increase with time. Implants have similar survival rates with the literature in Turkey region as well. It was observed that few reports with limited data were reported considering the high number of implants placed in the Turkey.
