Removal of chlorinated organic compounds during wastewater treatment: achievements and limits

Abstract: A large number of chlorinated contaminants are found in wastewater, originating from domestic and industrial sources and from runoff captured by sewers. The presence of some of these contaminants, such as the pharmaceutical diclofenac, has recently been documented, whereas the presence of other contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, has been known for many years. This mini-review discusses the current state of knowledge regarding the degradation and outflow of chlorinated contaminants from municipal … Show more

“…Tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), and other chlorinated compounds are extensively used in industry (e.g., as solvents, extractants, or degreasing agents) and, therefore, commonly found in wastewaters [1][2][3]. Partial dechlorination of these compounds also results in the occurrence of lesser chlorinated ethenes, such as cis/trans-1,2-dichloroethene (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC), as secondary pollutants [1,4,5].…”

“…Of particular interest were human feces-associated microbes, along with phylotypes that may be responsible for transformation of xenobiotic contaminants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). These persistent organic pollutants might be partially dechlorinated under anaerobic conditions in certain water resource recovery processes, but, other than by partitioning into the biosolids, they are generally not removed by traditional aerobic wastewater treatment (Krzmarzick and Novak, 2014).…”

“…Nowadays, many different bacteria have been described that perform reductive dehalogenation. They can be classified as facultative or obligate organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) (Krzmarzick andNovak, 2014, Atashgahi et al, 2016). Halorespiring bacteria have been isolated from a wide range of environments and show great differences in their phylogeny (Mayer-Blackwell et al, 2016).…”
