Methanogens are responsible for the last step in anaerobic digestion (AD), in which methane (a biofuel) is produced. Some methanogens can cometabolize chlorinated pollutants, contributing for their removal during AD. Methanogenic cofactors involved in cometabolic reductive dechlorination, such as F 430 and cobalamin, contain metal ions (nickel, cobalt, iron) in their structure. We hypothesized that the supplementation of trace metals could improve methane production and the cometabolic dechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethene (DCE) by pure cultures of Methanosarcina barkeri. Nickel, cobalt, and iron were added to cultures of M. barkeri growing on methanol and methanol plus DCE. Metal amendment improved DCE dechlorination to vinyl chloride (VC): assays with 20 µM of Fe 3+ showed the highest final concentration of VC (5× higher than in controls without Fe 3+), but also in assays with 5.5 µM of Co 2+ and 5 µM of Ni 2+ VC formation was improved (3.5-4× higher than in controls without the respective metals). Dosing of metals could be useful to improve anaerobic removal of chlorinated compounds, and more importantly decrease the detrimental effect of DCE on methane production in anaerobic digesters. C

Sediments of combined sewers are seeded with microbes from a variety of sources, and experience varying biogeochemical conditions. A variety of redox processes have been demonstrated to occur within sewer systems, as well as transformation of several recalcitrant xenobiotic contaminants. Illumina sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene from sediments of three combined sewer systems in the northeastern United States resulted in 10 000 to 47 000 operational taxonomic units per sample. Whereas orders Clostridiales and Bacteroidales, considered human fecal indicators, were dominant in one city's sediments; other cities had communities suggestive of diverse redox processes, including reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organic compounds. Collection systems previously associated with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) biotransformation, and those with elevated in situ PCB concentrations, had high abundances of Dehalococcoidetes. The results suggest that wastewater collection systems have intrinsic passive treatment capacity, reducing contaminant loads on water resource recovery facilities and, ultimately, on receiving waters. Global energy demand continues to rise quickly. Currently, 86 to 88% of the energy supplied in the world is from fossil fuels, such as coal, oil or natural gas (Shah, 2014; Weiland, 2010). The reliance on fossil fuels to fulfil energy requirements, in a near future, is impractible: reserves of this type of fuels are limited and depleting at a fast rate; and, CO 2 emissions derived from the utilization of fossil fuels are one of the major contributors for the greenhouse effect (Shah, 2014; Weiland, 2010; Scragg, 2009). It is time to shift towards more sustainable and renewable sources of energy. Biogas is a good alternative renewable energy source, as it can be used to produce power and heat, or used as transport fuel (Weiland, 2010). Biogas is produced anaerobically from organic waste and wastewater, or energy crops and it consists of methane (50-75%), CO 2 (25-50%), and small quantities of other components, such as water, H 2 S, and O 2 (Gomez, 2013). Wastewaters store a high energy potential; it is estimated that municipal wastewater stores 3 to 10 times more energy than what is nowadays required for its treatment (Liu and Cheng, 2014; Gude, 2016). Recovering that energy is crucial to make the wastewater treatment process more sustainable and it will have a great impact on fulfilling the world's energy requirements. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been applied for several decades for this, with installations spread all over the world. In recent years, Bioelectrochemical Systems (BESs) have gained interest as a promising technology to recover energy and resources from wastewaters as well. They can be applied alone or in combination with other processes, such as AD, algae treatment, or electrodialysis (Liu and Cheng, 2014). Both the conventional AD systems and the more avant-garde BES have some advantages and disadvantages that are summarised in Table 1.
