At present, one of the main problems which can be found within chemical engineering education is the availability of real industrial plants able to provide an experimentation framework. The importance of this kind of plants lies in allowing students to apply the learned theoretical concepts to solve real problems. In this paper, a remote tool for educational purposes is presented. More specifically, the implementation of a four‐tank plant, its internal control design and the implementation of an EasyJava tool for executing JavaScript code in both simulation and real experimental tests have been widely described. As a result, a tool that allows to perform experimental tests over the plant in both real and simulation modes has been obtained. In this tool, the limits of use are imposed by the plant and not by the own tool.

This paper presents a hardware and software architecture for the development of educational laboratories, through the connection of real Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to industrial virtual plants. In addition, to illustrate the use of the proposed architecture, two laboratories based on a bottling plant and the automatic irrigation process of a greenhouse using Modicon M340 PLCs of Schneider have been developed. Abstract-By creating "an Internet of Laboratory Things" we have built a blend of real and virtual laboratory spaces that enables students to gain practical skills necessary for their professional science and engineering careers. All our students are distance learners. This provides them by default with the proving ground needed to develop their skills in remotely operating equipment, and collaborating with peers despite not being colocated. Our laboratories accommodate state of the art research grade equipment, as well as large-class sets of off-the-shelf work stations and bespoke teaching apparatus. Distance to the student is no object and the facilities are open all hours. This approach is essential for STEM qualifications requiring development of practical skills, with higher efficiency and greater accessibility than achievable in a solely residential programme.
