“…Japon Erkek Voleybol Takımı da bronz madalya kazanarak başarılı oldu. Voleybol takımlarının bu başarısı fiziksel dezavantajlarını disiplinli ve sistematik çalışmaya avantaja dönüştürmelerinin ve azimlerinin eseriydi (Macnaughtan, 2012(Macnaughtan, , 2014(Macnaughtan, , 2020Merklejn, 2013;Miller, 2012: 177-178;Tagsold, 2011). “…I also add to the burgeoning conversation on Japanese women athletes. Several scholars have tracked the gender and nationalistic discourses of the women’s volleyball team, Tōyō no Majo (Oriental Witches), during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics (Macnaughtan, 2014; Merklejn, 2013; Tagsold, 2011). Except for Kietlinski’s (2011) analysis of Olympic gold medalist Arakawa in her historical monograph on Japanese sportswomen, few scholars have examined Japanese figure skaters and figure skating culture.…”

“…covered the World Cup championship, the team's glorious return, exclusive interviews, reactions of fans and spectators, the popularity of Nadeshiko goods, and even the scarcity of girls soccer teams. While Otomo (2007) reveals the incongruity behind constructing Tōyō no Majo as "dutiful daughters," or in terms of national femininity, Tagsold (2011) reads Daimatsu in a highly nationalistic context, as the father figure managing his daughters. Despite Kietlinski's (2011b) claim that sportswomen redefine women's "national responsibility" of supporting men (p. 178), that these women athletes are read as daughters sustaining the father nation, is telling of their still subordinated positions within society.…”

“…Here I add to scholarship on women athletes in the sociocultural context of Japan. Scholars have examined Tōyō no Majo in relation to nationalism and gender (Merklejn, 2013; Otomo, 2007; Tagsold, 2011). Otomo (2007) asserts that sports journalists avoided conflicting representations of femininity and sport performance by deliberately depicting the volleyball players as “dutiful daughters” (p. 122).…”
