Biçimlendirmeyi 1964 Tokyo Olimpiyat Oyunları Asya kıtasında düzenlemiş ilk Olimpiyat’tır. II. Dünya Savaşı’ndan sonra on yıl içinde küllerinden yeniden doğan Japonya, uluslararası konjonktürün büyük etkisiyle kazandığı ev sahipliği görevini ziyadesiyle yerine getirmiş ve Tokyo Oyunları’nı sportif ve diplomatik açıdan bir çıkış rampası olarak kullanmıştır. Oyunlar’da 29 madalya kazanan Japonya, baştan aşağı yenilediği altyapısıyla Tokyo ve çevresinin ekonomik ve turistik potansiyelini ve organizasyondaki başarısıyla teknolojik ve endüstriyel gelişimini dünyaya tanıtmıştır. Üçte ikisi güreşçilerden oluşan sporcu kafilesiyle Türkiye, hepsi güreşte olmak üzere ikisi altın altı madalya kazanmış ve Türkiye 1992’ye kadar Oyunlar’da bu sayıya ulaşamamıştır. Japonya’nın çıkışa geçtiği Türkiye’nin ise gerilemeye başladığı Tokyo Olimpiyatı’nın uluslararası çerçevede incelendiği bu araştırma makalesinde Türkçe ve İngilizce çok çeşitli birincil ve ikincil kaynaklar kullanılarak bahsedilen olgunun sebepleri ve sonuçları nitel yöntemle analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın ana amacı Türk spor tarihinin fazla işlenmeyen bir alanını dünya literatüründe incelemek; uzun erimli amacı ise Olimpik performansın ve organizasyon başarısının anlaşılmasında tarihsel altyapının önemini göstermektir. Keza, bir Asya ülkesi olarak Japonya ikisi Kış Olimpiyatları olmak üzere Olimpiyatlar’a dört kez ev sahipliği yapmış; Türkiye ise beş kez aday olmasına rağmen hiç ev sahipliği kazanamamıştır. Bu bağlamda, İstanbul ve Tokyo’nun yollarının kesiştiği ve ayrıştığı düzlemlerde, spordan ayrı düşünülemeyecek dış politika dinamiklerinin sosyo-politik iç dinamiklere uzandığı bu çalışmada disiplinler üstü bir yaklaşımla Türkiye’nin Olimpik Hareketi’ne katkıda bulunulması hedeflenmektedir.
