Remediation of diesel-contaminated soil enhanced with firefighting foam application

Abstract: During rescue operations related to the elimination of the effects of industrial accidents or natural disasters, extinguishing agents are used that affect the migration and transformation of contamination in the environment. Firefighting foam sprayed onto an oil spill slowly drains to an aqueous solution and penetrates the soil. The role of surfactants in the removal of petroleum derivatives is well known, but such extinguishing agents also contain solvents, preservatives, corrosion inhibitors and other ingred… Show more

“…Thus, works [12,13] show that many manufacturers of foaming agents indicate that their products are environmentally friendly and quickly decompose in the environment. However, despite such claims, the authors of the cited work indicate that almost all products cause irreparable harm to the environment.…”

“…Among the large group of xenobiotics released into the environment, petroleum derivatives are particularly dangerous, especially given continuing industrial development and the rising demand for fuel [ 1 , 2 ]. Diesel oil is a highly problematic pollutant, as it contains multiple toxic carcinogens and teratogens, which differ in their chemical structure and biodegradability.…”

“…Diesel oil also has a high potential for migration and uncontrolled spread in the environment [ 3 , 4 ]. Compared to other petroleum derivatives, diesel oil is slower to evaporate and decompose [ 2 ], posing a challenge for environmental engineering.…”

“…Así, una herramienta muy útil para solucionar este problema es la biorremediación, la cual permite restaurar suelos o aguas contaminadas, siendo esta técnica una alternativa biotecnológica muy interesante. Dicha técnica utiliza microorganismos con capacidad de biodegradar hidrocarburos como fuente de energía para su crecimiento y desarrollo (Rakowska, 2020).…”
