Remapping Translation Studies: Towards a Translation Studies Ontology1

Abstract: Building on a common view of translation as a human intentional activity, this article presents a translation studies thesaurus in which all concepts from the multitude of different translation studies areas listed in Baker (1998a), the “Bibliography of Translation Studies” (1998-), Williams and Chesterman (2002) and the “EST-Directory 2003” are brought together on a single map that revises Holmes’s map (1972). “…Product-oriented studies are generally of a comparative nature, as they tend to investigate both the source and target texts by means, for examples, of contrastive linguistics, contrastive pragma-linguistics, contrastive pragmatics and contrastive discourse analysis (cf. Vandepitte, 2008) or texts produced under different conditions (with, without or with different CAI tool).

“…In the context of translation, Cronin (2010: 2) finds that all these changes call into question the central pillars of Holmes' celebrated map of translation studies (1988), which had been the foundations of the discipline until very recently (Vandepitte 2008). This disciplinary approach focused on the notion of medium, with a clear distinction, for example, into theories of translation done by machines or humans:…”
