Justinian's triumphal column was the tallest free-standing column of the pre-modern world and was crowned with arguably the largest metal equestrian sculpture created anywhere in the world before 1699. The Byzantine empire's bronze horseman towered over the heart of Constantinople, assumed new identities, spawned conflicting narratives, and acquired widespread international acclaim. Because all traces of Justinian's column were erased from the urban fabric of Istanbul in the sixteenth century, scholars have undervalued its astonishing agency and remarkable longevity. Its impact in visual and verbal culture was arguably among the most extensive of any Mediterranean monument. This book analyzes Byzantine, Islamic, Slavic, Crusader, and Renaissance historical accounts, medieval pilgrimages, geographic, apocalyptic and apocryphal narratives, vernacular poetry, Byzantine, Bulgarian, Italian, French, Latin, and Ottoman illustrated manuscripts, Florentine wedding chests, Venetian paintings, and Russian icons to provide an engrossing and pioneering biography of a contested medieval monument during the millennium of its life.

A parchment codex of the early sixth century a.d., now in Vienna, contains a remarkable series of nearly 400 full-page illustrations of individual botanical species. These illustrations accompany an alphabetical recension of a pharmacological treatise on the medicinal properties of plants written by Dioskourides of Anazarbos, a Greek author of the first century a.d. Both the date of the codex and the style of its botanical illustrations have encouraged suggestions that the latter were modelled somehow on classical archetypes. This article presents new observations in support of the classical archetypes theory, but questions the traditional view that these archetypes were transmitted by ‘illustrated texts’ or ‘pattern books’ executed in papyrus or parchment. What follows is a new hypothesis concerning the nature of the artistic intermediaries used by painters, mosaicists and sculptors during antiquity.

La presenza degli artefici greco-costantinopolitani a Roma nel VI secolo * In un saggio del 1979 dedicato a F. W. Deichmann e pubblicato nel 1984 1 sostenni una tesi che andava completamente controcorrente, specialmente in relazione al dedicatario, il maggior archeologo cristiano del XX secolo, ch'è stato il massimo sostenitore dell'importanza e dell'azione di Costantinopoli nella diffusione di manufatti e idee, ma non di architetti e maestranze, nel bacino del Mediterraneo: una mobilità d'idee e di sculture, già lavorate e pronte per l'uso, realizzate in marmo del Proconneso, ma un'immobilità degli uomini. Invece a mio parere esistevano elementi tali da suffragare la presenza a Roma (ma il fenomeno già allora aveva un àmbito ben più vasto dello specifico di Roma), accanto a prodotti importati già rifiniti da Costantinopoli , di materiali allo stato di abbozzo e di artefici greco-costantinopolitani, oltre all'attività delle maestranze locali, nel duplice aspetto d'imitatori o di non imitatori dei prodotti greco-costantinopolitani 4. Tra l'altro tale articolazione, che amplia e arricchisce il quadro, si adegua alla realtà della produzione nelle sue varie fasi di lavorazione e allo stato delle sculture come si son rinvenute nelle cave dell'isola di Proconneso, che oggi conosciamo grazie ai fondamentali contributi di N.
