Building on the writings of homeless and formerly homeless memoirists from the United States and United Kingdom, this paper examines how the voices and ideas of those who experience homelessness are consistently removed from public debate and historical memory. While people without homes are discussed at length in journalistic and academic texts, their own voices are rarely at the center of such conversations. Memoirists argue that this exclusion is not passive or benign. They attest to persistent efforts to make their voices heard, even as newspapers, television stations, and other institutions of knowledge obstruct their efforts. In this way, homeless voices are actively and repeatedly displaced by the commentary of elite experts. Based on these insights, I engage with literature in geography and subaltern studies to advance a new understanding of subalternity as a process of epistemic displacement. Moving beyond deconstructive approaches to representation, I argue that challenging subalternity involves disseminating subaltern scholarship, journalism, and expertise to confront society's failure to listen.

Eksploitasi seksual dan kekerasan fisik yang dilakukan tentara Jepang terhadap perempuan pribumi di era penjajahan tahun 1942-1945 yang direpresentasikan kembali dalam teks-teks sastra pascakolonial, menjadi satu hal yang menarik untuk dikaji. Relevan dengan latar belakang tersebut, tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis dan mengungkapkan permasalahan perempuan pribumi yang mengalami subaltern karena dipaksa oleh tentara Jepang menjadi jugun ianfu. Sumber data untuk mengungkapkan permasalah tersebut adalah cerpen karya Faisal Oddang berjudul Kapotjes dan Batu yang Terapung. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah satuan kata, frasa, serta kalimat-kalimat dalam bentuk narasi dalam sudut pandang pengarang, maupun dialog antartokoh yang menggambarkan permasalahan subaltern jugun ianfu. Metode penelitian kualitatif dan pendekatan analisis isi digunakan untuk mengungkapkan masalah perempuan pribumi subaltern yang menjadi jugun ianfu dalam cerpen Kapotjes dan batu Yang Terapung dilakukan melalui telaah penokohan jugun ianfu bernama Suriani atau Hana. Telaah terhadap penokohan Suriani meliputi gambaran fisik, psikis, tindakan, kepribadian, dan relasi dominasi superior tokoh lain terhadap Suriani yang tergambar dalam teks dialog dan monolog cerpen. Tahapan analisis isi yang diterapkan adalah metode analisis hermeneutika, sesuai dengan pandangan Krippendoff. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan subalternisasi terhadap jugun ianfu dalam cerpen Kapotjes dan Batu yang Terapung terjadi karena dominasi kekuasaan tentara Jepang yang diwujudkan dalam (1) tindakan pelecehan fisik, (2) perkosaan, (3) eksploitasi dan perdagangan seksual, (4) penggantian identitas, (5) paksaan menghormati lagu kebangsaan Jepang, serta (6) penghilangan hak-hak kebebasan perempuan yang dipaksa menjadi jugun ianfu. Dominasi tersebut berdampak pada kerusakan fisik serta trauma psikis yang bermuara pada upaya perlawanan.

This article explores infrastructures of subaltern resistance in Pakistan through a focus on spatial and performative modes and across a number of historical and contemporary examples. I start with the figure of the puppet, tracing it historically as an example of how culturally specific modes of dissent have evolved from a colonial to a postcolonial context, and further into a neoliberal space. I then analyse the practice of ‘wall chalking’, which could be considered a local form of graffiti that also embodies debates over religious and ethnic identity through the contested status of script in the country. In narrating these examples, my aim is to show how a specific form of resistance has developed in the country through the displacement of the dissenting subject. Here I conceptualise resistance as a Foucauldian counter-conduct that transforms space through a creative and embodied use of tactics. It is a form of subaltern resistance that emerges in relation to non-humans and everyday rituals and has developed in subtler (and more resistant) forms, through ways of enacting that thrive within and through the vulnerability of the subject.
