Religiosity appears to be rising in China. However, this trend hides the extent of fluidity in religious beliefs and behaviors. Within-person changes in religiosity across time are not random but patterned in systematic ways. In this article, we examine the predictors of religiosity in a longitudinal sample of Chinese adults from 2012 to 2016. Religious outcomes are correlated with sociodemographic, political, and health variables. Notably, all religious outcomes are positively associated with household income and also with the unfair treatment index, a measure of negative personal experiences with the government. Measures of health problems are positively associated with religious importance, though not with religious identification or behavior.

Background: As China is going through a profound aging process, the mental health of the elderly is becoming an issue. As in many other societies, the elderly in China is a population at high risk of suicide; Methods: Data for the study were taken from the Sample Survey of the Aged Population in Urban/Rural China (SSAPUR) accomplished in 2010 by the China Ministry of Civil Affairs. The valid sample for this study was composed of 18,683 individuals, including 9416 urban residents and 9267 rural residents both aged 60 or more years; Results: Logistic regression analyses showed that household income and expenditure, the number of children, chronic diseases, disability of daily living, depression, the frequency of visiting neighbors and having friends or relatives who can help or not had remarkable effects on the suicidal ideation among urban and rural old people. Gender, education, political affiliation, marital status and self-rated health status did not work on the dependent variable. However, some risk factors for suicidal ideation among the Chinese elderly were different between rural and urban regions; Conclusions: We should take different measures when facing the different groups of the elderly.

Objetivo: avaliar as evidências científicas referentes à relação entre religiosidade/espiritualidade (R/E) e o comportamento suicida. Método: estudo de revisão integrativa da literatura, nas bases de dados: LILACS, PubMed e CINAHL, de janeiro de 2011 a fevereiro de 2020. Foram identificados 1044 artigos, dos quais sete foram incluídos no estudo. Resultados: Predominaram estudos quantitativos (71,4%), realizados com universitários (57,14%), que investigaram a religião (71,43%) e diferentes dimensões do comportamento suicida (85,7%). A maioria dos estudos retratara benefícios da religião e da espiritualidade, mesmo que indiretamente na vida dos jovens e apontaram para efeitos protetivos da R/E em relação ao comportamento suicida. Conclusão: A R/E pode ser um fator importante para adolescentes e adultos jovens que merece ser explorada em investigações e ações que fortaleçam os fatores protetores contra o comportamento suicida e permitam o aumento da literacia em saúde mental entre lideranças religiosas.
