Reliability of Snellen charts for testing visual acuity for driving: prospective study and postal questionnaire

Abstract: Objectives To assess the ability of patients with binocular 6/9 or 6/12 vision on the Snellen chart (Snellen acuity) to read a number plate at 20.5 m (the required standard for driving) and to determine how health professionals advise such patients about driving. Design Prospective study of patients and postal questionnaire to healthcare professionals.

“…In our study, 93.2% of patients were able to read all the plates. This was a larger proportion when compared with the study by Currie et al, 8 where only 74% of subjects with visual acuity of 6/9 and only 66% of subjects with a visual acuity of 6/12 were able to read the number-plate. This may be accounted for by their use of an older subject group with a consequent greater degree of cataract formation, poorer contrast sensitivity, and more problems with glare.…”

“…Outcome is rated between 0 and 5 (0 = no contraction, 1 = visible/palpable muscle contraction, no movement, 2 = movement with gravity eliminated, 3 = movement against gravity only, 4 = movement against gravity with some resistance, 5 = normal strength). Snellen test a (Carr et al, 2010;Currie et al, 2000) Tests visual acuity: Participant stands 10 feet from a standardized chart with 11 lines of blocked letters, the first line being very large. Subsequent rows have sequentially more numbers and letters smaller in size.…”

“…Currie et al 10 afirmam que o teste de acuidade visual com a tabela de Snellen é um fraco preditor da capacidade individual de dirigir. A Academia Americana de Oftalmologia 11 constata que não existem dados consistentes que confirmem que a acuidade visual seja um preditor válido sobre a capacidade de condução e segurança no trânsito.…”
