Reliability of radiographic measurements of knee motion following knee arthroplasty for use in a virtual knee clinic

Abstract: INTRODUCTIONWe sought to validate radiographic measurements of range of motion of the knee after arthroplasty as part of a new system of virtual clinics.METHODSThe range of motion of 52 knees in 45 patients was obtained by 2 clinicians using standardised techniques and goniometers. Inter-rater reliability and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated. Radiographs of these patients’ knees in full active flexion and extension were also used to calculate intra and inter-rater reliability compared… Show more

“…The benefit of physical goniometry is that it is inexpensive and can be conducted quickly and does not require radiological intervention (or exposure to radiation), however, it is rather user dependent. Most contemporary studies agree that X-ray is the gold standard method of KFA measurement ( 3 , 9 ), exhibiting a high degree of reliability, which concurs with our results.…”

“…Plain radiographs have been used to measure pre -and postoperative knee flexion in research studies [4] and computer-assisted navigation has been used to analyse knee ROM during orthopaedic surgery [3]. Radiography currently represents the gold standard for all ROM measurements [14,21,23] but this method is expensive, has potentially harmful effects on humans [14], and can only measure static ROM [21]. There have been many studies that have investigated the accuracy, sensitivity and reliability of knee ROM measurement [3,4,7,9,12,18,20,27].…”
